Cucuy Blowing LA Radio Away.

According to Radio & records magazine, Spanish Broadcasting System’s KLAX (La Raza)/Los Angeles is now the market’s No. 1 station en Español thanks to a 3.0-3.9 12+ surge that pushes the station from 10th to fourth overall. The jump is directly related to the March 22 arrival of Renan Almendares Coello — “El Cucuy de la Mañana” — to morning drive at La Raza. When examining the monthly extrapolations for El Cucuy, the numbers are stunning: KLAX was by far No. 1 in morning drive in April, earning a 7.7 share. Meanwhile, Univision Radio competitor KSCA (La Nueva 101.9) — Coello’s former station — is struggling in mornings with host Eddie “Piolín” Sotelo. According to monthly Arbitron ratings extrapolations, the Piolín por la Mañana program received a paltry 1.7 share in April. That’s down from a 5.6 share seen during both November and December 2003.
