Discovery en Español Celebrates Its 5th Anniversary.

In celebration of its 5th Anniversary, Discovery en Español will roll out a month of special programming, including U.S. premiere presentations of original documentaries, as well as encore presentations of its critically acclaimed hits. MOMENTOS DE DISCOVERY (“DISCOVERY MOMENTS”) kicks off Friday, June 6, 2003, at 9 PM ET/PT and will continue through the month every Friday and Saturday evening.

“In the past five years, Discovery en Español has become the premier destination for Spanish-language documentaries, specials and educational programming,” said David Karp, senior vice president and general manager, Discovery en Español. “This month-long celebration will highlight some of the outstanding specials we have featured on the network, and also give viewers a peek into the future of Discovery en Español. We have a lot of new, original programming scheduled for the rest of the year and in June, viewers will get a taste of what they can expect in the coming months.”

Friday, June 6
9PM — SOBREVIVIENTES: VOCES DE UNA TRAGEDIA (SURVIVORS: VOICES OF A TRAGEDY)
In 1972, a Uruguayan Air Force plane carrying 46 members of a rugby team and their families crashed in the Andes of Argentina. Although 32 people survived the impact, only 16 were miraculously rescued after spending 10 weeks in the snowy mountainside — sometimes resorting to extreme survival tactics, like eating human flesh. Viewers will accompany a group of the survivors on a three-day trek to the crash site, hear their memories and see archival footage from the event. Encore Presentation

10PM — FUTBOL: NEGOCIO Y PASION (SOCCER: A BUSINESS AND A PASSION)
World-renowned soccer players like Chile’s Ivan Zamorano, Argentina’s Matias Almeyda and Brazil’s Denilson De Oliveira join journalists, agents and trainers in this expose about the business of soccer in Latin America. The program reveals stories about fame, success, multi-million dollar contracts, repercussions and failures. Encore Presentation Saturday, June 7

9PM — MISTERIOS DE YUCATAN (MYSTERIES OF THE YUCATAN)
A group of scientists and divers lead an expedition to find ancient Mayan treasures in the sinkholes of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. This documentary joins the daring research team that travels through a maze of caverns and galleries, unveiling mysteries that have been underwater for thousands of years. Encore Presentation

10PM — GIANTES EN LA PATAGONIA (GIANTS OF THE PATAGONIA)
This expedition takes viewers to the tip of South America, where paleontologists unearthed fossils of giant dinosaurs. The program traces the first explorations by European and North American scientists in Patagonia, from the voyage of Charles Darwin to the contributions of Lidekker and Romer, as well as the astonishing discoveries by Florentino Ameghino and Jose

9PM — BUSCANDO AMERICA: LA VIDA DE RUBEN BLADES (SEARCHING FOR AMERICA: THE LIFE OF RUBEN BLADES)
The program profiles the award-winning musician, actor and social activist. Ruben Blades’ law degree coupled with his rich musical talent gave him the ability to help make music an avenue for social commentary and change. As an actor, Blades starred in such U.S. film hits as “All the Pretty Horses” and “The Milagro Beanfield War.” Encore Presentation

10PM — FITO PAEZ: CORAZON CLANDESTINO (FITO PAEZ: CLANDESTINE HEART)
Argentine Fito Paez is well known for his controversial character, influenced by the hippie era, leftist politics and skepticism. Winner of two Latin Grammy awards for best rock song and best rock vocalist, Paez fuses his influences of rock, jazz, tango and folkloric music to produce prolific, modern compositions. Fito Paez: Clandestine Heart was nominated for a 2002 Latin American Emmy Award. Encore Presentation

Saturday, June 14
9PM — LAS SOMBRAS DE GAUDI (GAUDI’S SHADOWS)
This is the story of one of the most controversial architects of the 20th century. Gaudi designed the fecund and perpetually unfinished church of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Considered a saint, he died tragically — penniless and unrecognized. Encore Presentation

10PM — MARIA FELIX: LA INDOMABLE (MARIA FELIX: THE INDOMITABLE)
This program introduces Mexican legend Maria Felix, who flourished through the 1960s, shared the screen with such greats as Yves Montand, conquered Hollywood and became a Latin American icon. When she died at 88 years of age, she had outlived her son, left behind three husbands and enjoyed near perfect health. Encore Presentation

9PM — LA GUIA MAXIMA: MASTODONTE (MASTODON IN YOUR BACKYARD)
From a recent mastodon site near a backyard pond in Hyde Park, N.Y., paleontologists explain the difference between this prehistoric predecessor of the elephant — which migrated out of Africa and survived in North America for roughly 3.7 million years — and its more famous cousin, the mammoth. The program presents the controversial and varied theories of this keystone species’ disappearance from the earth. Network Premiere

10PM — OTZI, EL HOMBRE DE HIELO (MYSTERY OF THE ICEMAN)
What killed Otzi the Iceman? Since the discovery of this freeze-dried Neolithic-Era man in the Alps, scientists have learned the exciting clues from his intact flesh, muscles and organs, as well as the artifacts that surrounded his burial site. 10PM — ANGUILA: ELECTROSHOCK AMAZONICO (ELECTRIC EELS: AN AMAZONIAN SHOCKER)
This program explores the murky waters of the Amazon and sets out to reveal the truth behind one of the most misunderstood fish of all time. The electric eel is best known for its electric discharges of more than 700 volts — shocks strong enough to knock an adult human being completely unconscious. Researchers travel into Brazil and Venezuela to track this eel, and receive violent shocks while collecting data for the sake of medicine and science. Network Premiere

This program explores the psychopathic personality of one of the biggest serial killers in the world.
