‘Does My Butt Look Big?’ Finally Answered!
April 12, 2006
It’s one of those eternal no-win questions — “does my butt look big?” Finally, men and women have guidelines on how to answer that question, as nearly 4,000 people nationwide presented their most memorable responses in the Assets in America Survey. Eye-opening findings also revealed which celebrities define the ideals of what is most physically attractive in our society and what assets both genders are really checking out on each other.
“I wanted to get to the bottom of age-old questions like “does my butt look big in this?” explains Spanx founder and entrepreneur Sara Blakely, the woman behind the Assets in America Survey. “For years, women and men have made assumptions about their own appearance and what assets most appealed to each other. The survey finally shows how both sexes actually
think!”
Surprising Survey Results
The Assets in America Survey featured a combination of 25 multiple choice and write-in questions that measures how people describe their own appearance and what attracts them most to others. Key findings include:
* When asked to pick which female and male celebrities had the most ideal bodies, Jessica Simpson (40% men, 28% women) and Brad Pitt (43% men, 37% women) topped the list.
* All eyes are on women. Ever feel like everyone is staring at you? If you’re a woman, you have a right to be paranoid. It turns out that while 50% of female respondents check out men first when they walk into a party, about 40% of women check out the competition (other women) first.
* Move over butts … abs/waistlines tend to be the focus of men and women. It’s the asset women listed as their #1 problem area (62%), the #1 turnoff area (gut/beer belly/love handles) when checking out men (55%), and the #2 asset women check out in other women. Guys don’t have it so easy either. 80% of men list the abs/waistline area as the #1 problem area and 53% list the gut/fat rolls as their #1 turnoff in women.
* Make way for the metrosexual … one out of three men claimed that they either use padding or inserts, take vitamins, or have surgical implants to increase the size of certain assets.
* In a separate write-in section for most attractive female and male celebrities, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were the clear winners. Others frequently mentioned included Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson, and Jessica Alba for the women and George Clooney, Matthew McConaughey, and Johnny Depp for the men.
* When checking out the opposite sex, both sexes notice the face first (42% of men rated eyes and smile as the first asset they notice as did 69% of the women) — and then the chest.
* Curves rule over the super thin look. Toned, curvaceous Jessica Simpson received more votes than lean Jennifer Aniston when respondents were asked to pick which celebrity female has the most ideal figure. With Queen Latifah besting Nicole Richie, curvier women such as Beyonce Knowles and Jennifer Lopez also received votes from 20% of the men and 30% of the women.
* It’s okay to “cheat” a bit and use “asset enhancers” such as body slimmers, teeth whitening products, and padding or inserts to improve your appearance. 71% of men and 93% of women said it was fine to do so to look your best. (Strangely enough, 6% of the male respondents admitted to wearing bodyshapers or slimmers too!)
* Marilyn Monroe’s curves are “America’s Most Loved Asset.” George Clooney’s eyes and J-Lo’s butt took second and third place honors in this question. The two most popular write-in suggestions were Angelina Jolie’s lips and Matthew McConaughey’s abs.
Does my butt look big in this?
As for the most difficult question of all, according to the survey, some of the most memorable answers respondents have either received or given to “Does my butt look big in this?” include:

2. Yes, but it takes the focus off your cankles.
3. pause…”I like big butts and I cannot lie…” (channeling the Sir Mix A-Lot song).
4. No, your butt makes your butt look big.
5. I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may keep me from having sex tonight.

2. How can it look big when it isn’t?
3. Never baby, your butt is just the right size for me.
