Drug-Prevention Training Program For Parents.

Focus on the Family launched the new How to Drug Proof Your Kids prevention training program with the first of a series of program facilitator training sessions to be held nationally.

Many parents believe that when confronted with drugs or alcohol their kids will be the ones who just say no. But, according to the U.S. Department of Justice 70 percent of high school seniors have used alcohol and nearly 35 percent have used marijuana in the last year.

“Healthy communication between parents and their children is the key to reducing the risk of drug use,” Maher said. “And with this program, parents will be given the tools and proven strategies needed to begin to influence their children’s choices when it comes to drug and alcohol use.”

Over the course of six weeks, a trained facilitator will take parents through one of the most in-depth drug awareness curriculums in the nation. Parents will increase their awareness of popular drugs and their effects, learn to engage their teens in meaningful conversations, recognize the warning signs and properly deal with kids who are already using drugs.

“Trying to talk with kids about drugs can be a daunting proposition for many parents,” said Yvette Maher, vice president of Community Impact Outreach for Focus on the Family. “Many parents desire to help their kids make positive life choices but they just don’t know where to start. How to Drug Proof Your Kids(TM) is the tool that parents have been waiting for. It will give them the training and confidence they need.”
