At a press conference in Los Angeles, El Premio de la Gente, Latin Music Fan Awards 2004 announced the official nominees and tribute honorees for its 6th annual awards show and the launch of a national voting campaign for fans to determine the award winners. This dynamic, Latin music awards ceremony, presented by title sponsor, Chevrolet, will take place on Thursday, October 21, 2004, at the Universal Amphitheatre in Studio City, California. Tickets are on sale now at all TicketMaster locations. The two-hour television broadcast of this popular awards celebration will air nationwide in primetime on Saturday, October 30, 2004, on the Telemundo Television Network.

“Understanding our unique and long tradition of offering fans the opportunity to select and announce the winners, El Premio is proud and honored to present them this year’s nominees. We are also very excited to be back home in Los Angeles at the Universal Amphitheatre,” said Luis Medina, executive producer and founder of El Premio de la Gente. “And most importantly, Latin music lovers will enjoy the expansion of voting opportunities to cast their vote through retail outlets, direct mail, and online ballots,”

“Once again, Telemundo will be the network to bring U.S. Hispanic viewers ‘El Premio de la Gente,’ the only awards show where the audience votes for their favorite stars,” said Ramón Escobar, Executive Vice President of Programming and Production, Telemundo. “This star-studded special is another example of our commitment to original productions that reflect the tastes and lifestyles of our viewers.”

Chevrolet once again is the presenting title sponsor of El Premio de la Gente. “Chevrolet is proud to partner with El Premio again this year,” said Brent Dewar, Chevrolet General Manager. “The excitement and energy of El Premio matches Chevrolet, where we are in the midst of the biggest wave of innovative new cars and trucks in Chevy history. Hay un movimiento en Chevy . . . Súbete. El Premio is a natural fit for Chevrolet and our new ‘Súbete’ campaign and we hope everyone will come on board and enjoy this year’s awards show with us.” Chevrolet’s campaign will include hosting the first-ever El Premio On The Road tour – a road show of El Premio de la Gente(R) nominee appearances in various cities. Other sponsor elements include consumer voting in participating Chevrolet dealerships, and involvement in broadcast and print media, as well as the awards show event.

Target Stores joins El Premio de la Gente this year as a new sponsor. “Target understands the importance of music in the lives of our guests and its role in Latino culture,” said John Remington, vice president of events marketing and communications, Target Corporation. “Our partnership with El Premio is a way for us to showcase Latino urban music talent and make their music more accessible to our guests.”

In participation with El Premio de la Gente, Target is launching a unique urban music promotion which includes a national sweepstakes, offering a winner and guest a trip to Los Angeles for an exclusive concert at Universal CityWalk. The concert, El Movimiento Urbano on Monday, October 11 is presented by Target and will feature the top artists associated with the emerging urban music movement – Akwid, Jae-P, Yolanda Perez and Crooked Stilo. A special tribute to Latin urban music from this performance will be taped and inserted into the El Premio de la Gente(R) award show broadcast.

For the second straight year, Yahoo! en español is the official online partner for El Premio de la Gente. “We’re excited to leverage LAUNCH, our new music destination on Yahoo! en español, to connect fans with this exciting event and provide Latin music fans the ability to decide on their favorite artists,” said Jose Rivera Font, Assistant General Manager, Yahoo! en español. Liz Sarachek, Executive Director, Marketing Services for Yahoo! en español added, “Our participation in this important event, for a second consecutive year, confirms our long-term commitment to both our users and advertisers, and validates the importance and size of the online U.S. Hispanic market. For the second year, the site also offers sponsors an exciting way to brand themselves in the Hispanic community with a well known property that receives unprecedented support from Latino’s who love music.”

ADVO and its popular ShopWi$e shared mail program was selected as a key distributor of the El Premio de la Gente official ballot. The nation’s largest home-delivered print advertising services and solutions company will target and deliver the event’s award ballots to more than 2.4 million of the 5 million Hispanic households expected to receive the ballots directly in their mailbox, greatly enhancing voting opportunities for fans across the nation.

Tecate joins El Premio de la Gente for a second year as the sponsor of a Red Carpet promotion that will bring winning fans to the show to be on the Red Carpet and greet the stars as they arrive to the event. Fans will have the opportunity to win tickets through special promotions in key participating grocery stores to be on the very special El Premio de la Gente(R) Red Carpet.

Every year El Premio de la Gente honors a variety of artists for their special achievement and popularity with fans. We are proud to announce the following tribute honorees for El Premio de la Gente, Latin Music Fan Awards 2004:

Tributo de la Gente – Jose Luis Rodriguez, El Puma

Jose Luis Rodriguez, affectionately known the world over as El Puma, is an international superstar singer and actor from Venezuela who has recorded musical hits and participated in a handful of telenovelas. His signifacant contributions to the world of music and to his legions of fans merit our special award, Tributo de la Gente – Tribute of the People.

Ciudadano de la Radio – Renan Almendarez Coello, El Cucuy de la Mañana El Cucuy de la Mañana, Renan Almendarez Coello, is a major force in Spanish-language radio and continues to be one of its most popular personalities. He is receiving the Ciudadano de la Radio – Citizen of the Radio tribute for his achievements as a distinguished and extremely popular radio personality and to recognize his long-time humanitarian work on behalf of the people.

Estrella de la Gente – Paquita la del Barrio

Paquita la del Barrio (born Francisca Viveros Barradas) became a celebrity after she decided to move from her native Veracruz to Mexico City in 1970. Her live performances, based on songs with lyrics depicting strong women, have seduced followers from all over the world and earned her tribute recognition as Estrella de la Gente – Star of the People.

Gloria de la Música – Aniceto Molina, El Rey del Vallenato Legendary singer and accordionist, Aniceto Molina – El Rey del Vallenato, started his career in music at the age of 12 in his native Colombia. Since then, he has become internationally acclaimed for his unparalleled skill with the accordion and his ability to connect with the people. He will be honored for his significant contributions to music with the Gloria de la Música – Glory of the Music tribute.
