Univision Communications Inc. announced that on April 29, 2002, it will introduce the first phase of its expanded lineup of exclusive, first-run Spanish-language programming on Galavision as part of a strategy to leverage its cable assets and take a more integrated approach to programming its three television networks. Galavision’s new lineup of original, first-run Spanish-language programming will expand its lead as the #1 general-interest Spanish-language cable network among Hispanics of all ages. With a strengthened schedule comprised of alternative formats that will complement the Univision and TeleFutura Networks, Galavision is expected to attract additional viewers to Spanish-language television from English-language networks.
“With nearly 70%, or 23 million of the 35 million U.S. Hispanics either Spanish-dominant or bilingual yet only serviced by three national Spanish-language broadcast networks, we recognized the need and huge opportunity to offer more Spanish-language general-entertainment programming to this underserved community,” said Ray Rodriguez, President and Chief Operating Officer, Univision Networks. “This new powerful programming lineup, which will be coordinated with our Univision and TeleFutura schedules to create added programming choices in each daypart, will allow us to better position Univision’s unique cable assets to attract a greater audience to Spanish-language television. We are confident that Galavision’s expanded schedule of culturally-relevant Spanish-language entertainment will enable us to deliver increased ratings throughout the day consistent with the blockbuster share we attract with Galavision’s popular Mexican League soccer games.”
Galavision’s new lineup of first-run and exclusive programming will provide the nation’s fastest growing television audience with exciting new choices currently not available on Spanish-language television in the U.S. The enhanced schedule will among other things capitalize on the success of Galavision’s most popular franchise – Mexican League soccer – with the introduction of more sports programming, including coverage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The new schedule will also include innovative talk, variety and live news shows, counter-programming the three existing Spanish-language broadcast networks.

On April 29th, Galavision will begin the introduction of a new enhanced programming lineup to its audience, which will include more sports, news, talk and variety shows. Weekday mornings will begin with “Primero Noticias,” a live morning news program featuring international and Latin American news, sports re-caps, finance and political discussions that will keep audiences informed about recent events. This will be followed by the highly acclaimed, live talk/variety magazine show “Hoy.” Hosted by the well known Gloria Calzada and Alfredo Adame, “Hoy” will feature celebrity guests, games and general interest segments such as sports, health, cooking, beauty and special audience-interactive segments.
Afternoons on Galavision will keep audiences tuned in with the introduction of “Vida TV,” a dynamic, live variety favorite featuring contests, games and exciting audience participation. This will be followed by “Noticiero Con Lolita Ayala,” which will cover the most important news on a daily basis from a trusted news personality.
Evenings on Galavision will now be even stronger, starting with “Por Usted,” a hard-hitting newsmagazine that leads into a one-hour block of exciting sports and news programming, including “La Jugada,” a returning favorite sports highlights program; “Zona Abierta,” featuring thought-provoking debates on current issues every week; and “Futbol A Fondo,” also a returning favorite exploring the world of Mexican soccer with interviews, current highlights and classic game footage.
Galavision will continue its popular evening lineup with the live news program “Vision AM.” Anchoring weekday evenings on Galavision is the live news program “Noticiero Con: Juaquin Lopez Doriga,” featuring the most up-to-the-minute news from Mexico, Latin America and around the world.
Weekends on Galavision will be about fun and sports, featuring an expanded Saturday and Sunday version of the popular children’s block, “Galamiguitos.” The sports line up features returning favorites and more action than ever, including “Lucha Libre,” “Boxeo en Esta Esquina” and the sensational “Futbol Mexicano,” featuring live weekend games.
Galavision will also participate in the Univision Networks’ comprehensive coverage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Beginning May 31, 2002 and lasting through June 30, 2002, Galavision will air at least 25 days of primetime “Match of the Day” telecasts, featuring a selection of the best games of the tournament. In addition, Galavision will also broadcast other FIFA tournaments, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
