Grupo Prisa announces the formation of Union Radio.
July 14, 2006
Grupo Prisa announced the formation of Union Radio to build and manage the world’s best Spanish-language radio stations through excellent programming and relevant content to the local community. W Radio (690 AM), Southern California’s newest all Spanish-language news, talk, sports and entertainment format is a strategic asset within the newly formed Union Radio. As the newest all-talk, all-Spanish-language radio station in Southern California, W Radio offers listeners timely community information and a forum that encourages discussion and gives voice to Southern California’s Hispanic community. Union Radio also owns Radio Caracol in Miami, Florida, the leader in talk radio for the Spanish speaking audience as well as GLR Networks, a company that produces and distributes programs and advertising spaces for almost 60 affiliated stations nationwide.
Union Radio will supply Spanish-language radio stations with world-class news services, compelling content focused on sports, entertainment and locally-relevant community programming, as well as a variety of musical formats. The new company will have almost 1100 radio stations, between its own and affiliated ones, distributed across Spain, the United States, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina and Chile, among others. At present it has 28 million listeners and expansion plans to roll out across the United States and Latin America.
“Grupo Prisa is the largest media conglomerate featuring Spanish-language newspapers, magazines and radio media outlets,” stated Augusto Delkader, newly appointed Managing Director of Union Radio. “We are committed to growing our radio presence in the United States, the same way we grew to become the most listened to radio stations in 17 countries. The key is our steadfast dedication to exceptional, original, and relevant content in local markets that will serve the community and therefore increase our listener base.”
Union Radio will capitalize on their successful format to expand their base in the United States and Latin America. Their investment growth rate in the world last year was more than 35.6%. Mr. Delkader says Grupo Prisa is well equipped to handle additional growth in the Americas.
In Spain, Union Radio has Cadena Ser, the undisputable audience leader in terms of both talk and music programs (40 Principales, Cadena Dial, M-80, Olé and Máxima).
In the Mexican market, Union Radio operates through Radiópolis, in which Televisa holds a 50% stake and which is managed by Unión Radio. Radiópolis has three basic programming lines: W Radio for talk programs, Bésame and 40 Principales.
There are also global programming formats that are broadcast in Panama, Costa Rica, Chile, Argentina and Colombia.
Radio Caracol, the undisputable leader in Colombia and one of the most prestigious stations in Latin America, constitutes another pillar of Unión Radio in this market. Caracol produces and distributes up to 10 programming line-ups in different music and talk radio formats.
The consolidation of these operations will enable the radio division of the Prisa Group to create a solid base with great territorial impact for the distribution of its global programming brands and for the optimization of commercial synergies that make an ambitious expansion plan possible in the Spanish speaking world.
Owned now by Union Radio, Southern California’s W Radio 690 brings experience and programming expertise to Southern California. The station launched in greater Los Angeles in February, 2006, on XETRA-690AM, a station previously known as The Mighty 690. W Radio 690 offers Hispanic audiences the newest radio format and exclusive programming in Southern California.
Grupo Prisa also publishes the magazines Cinemanía, Claves, Rolling Stone, Gentleman, and La revista 40.
