Telemundo announced it has named Johanna Guerra Vice President of Network News, effective immediately. Guerra joins Guillermo Santa Cruz, Vice President of Special Projects, News and Sports in assuming joint leadership of Telemundo’s Network News Division. The announcement was made by Jorge Hidalgo, Senior Executive Vice President, News and Sports, to whom both will continue reporting directly.

“Johanna and Guillermo have played vital roles in the development and growth of our award-winning news and sports divisions,” said Hidalgo. “Their dedication and expertise exemplify our founding pillars of excellence in journalism and service to the community, and I am confident that under their leadership the Telemundo Network News team will flourish.”

As VP of Network News, Guerra will oversee all news programming including “Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste,” the weekday and weekend editions of “Noticiero Telemundo” and all news content for other network shows. She will also be responsible for the news bureaus in Los Angeles, New York, DC, and Mexico City, and will manage talent development and communications, including securing correspondents, show anchors, and contributors. Guerra will work in partnership with Santa Cruz to plan and execute specials and news coverage of key events.

Santa Cruz was named Vice President of Special Events, News and Sports, last year and is responsible for impacting, developing, and coordinating strategic plans across all news and sports properties. From a production perspective, he directs Telemundo’s graphic look and overall technical advancement of all news and sports properties. He also oversees the execution of special news and sports events coverage, including the recent Mexican elections and Olympic Games, among others. In addition, he works in partnership with network sales to develop, increase, and maintain sponsorship opportunities within the news and sports properties. Santa Cruz will now also oversee “Cada Dia con Maria Antonieta” and “Cotorreando.”

Both Guerra and Santa Cruz are industry veterans and have been a part of the Telemundo family for many years.

As executive producer of the successful news magazine “Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste,” Guerra is an accomplished award-winning professional, as well as a skilled manager. She came to Telemundo as part of the NBC integration team, where she helped Telemundo’s network news department integrate with NBC News. Prior to that, Guerra was as a producer for MSNBC in Secaucus, New Jersey, responsible for the coverage of many important world events, including the World Trade Center terrorist attack in September 2001. Before joining NBC, she was executive producer at WNJU, Telemundo’s local New York station. Guerra played a key role in the station’s news expansion and under her leadership, WNJU’s 11pm newscast received an EMMY award as “most outstanding newscast.”

Santa Cruz joined Telemundo in 1999 as Executive Producer of Network Sports. In 2004 he was named Director of Deportes Telemundo, overseeing all aspects of production on the network’s wide range of sports programs, the daytime show “Cotorreando,” and working closely with the network’s programming and sales divisions to meet clients’ needs and expectations. He has been an integral part in the integration of Deportes Telemundo with NBC sports as well as the department’s expansion and was one of the executives in charge of Telemundo’s historic coverage of the 2004 Olympics. Prior to Telemundo, Santa Cruz was a Senior Producer of Sports at Univision, where he was instrumental in several aspects of production on a national scale, including news. He is an EMMY award-winning producer as well as a co-recipient of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award.
