Health Radio Program To Reach Hispanics Nationwide.
October 23, 2004
Hispanics nationwide will now have the benefit of house calls with a new Spanish-language radio program dedicated to preventive health. The show called “Prevenir es Salud” (Prevention is Health) debuted this month and is hosted by Elmer Huerta, M.D., M.P.H., Founder and Director of the Cancer Preventorium, at the Washington Cancer Institute, Washington Hospital Center, (DC) and board member of the American Legacy Foundation.
“Prevenir es Salud” uses easy to understand and straightforward messages about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. The goal of the production is to provide vital information to Latinos – a group that often lacks access to health care, according to the show’s producers. The show features opportunities for listeners to call in to ask health-related questions of host Dr. Huerta, who is internationally known for his work in providing health information via the media.
“Dr. Huerta has been committed to improving the health and well-being of Latinos for decades,” said Dr. Cheryl Healton, president and CEO of the American Legacy Foundation. “This new radio program is one of many tangible ways he is serving the Latino community. The positive impact he has made and will continue to make is immeasurable. We congratulate him on this new endeavor.”
Dr. Huerta has 20 years experience in patient care and education. He hosts “Cuidando su Salud” (Taking Care of Your Health), the only nationally syndicated daily radio show that is hosted and produced by a Latino physician in the United States. He also co-hosts “Hablemos de Salud” (Let’s Talk About Health), a nationally syndicated weekly television program on health promotion and disease prevention. Dr. Huerta is president and founder of Prevención, Inc., a non-profit organization that produces educational material for the Latino community. He is also founder and director of the Cancer Preventorium at the Washington Hospital Center in the District of Columbia.
Dr. Huerta also volunteers his time as a member of the national board of directors of the American Cancer Society, the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation. He was also appointed by President Clinton to the National Cancer Advisory Board.
“Prevenir es Salud” is produced by MW Media Productions and is aired live at noon Saturdays in several cities across the nation.
