Herdez & Hormel Foods Corporation Celebrate In LA.

Kicking off this summer, Herdez Corporation and Hormel Foods Corporation are celebrating the local Hispanic community by presenting a variety of family-oriented events. The events range from cooking demonstrations by a local Mexican chef, to a youth soccer clinic with a festival of booths for an afternoon of family fun and food.

“It’s all about celebrating the Hispanic culture with authentic food and community togetherness,” said Jim Splinter, vice president of marketing, consumer products, Hormel Foods. “Herdez and Hormel Foods are proud to be developing a strong relationship with the Hispanic community in Los Angeles.”

Celebrando con Herdez

Community and family are highly valued in the Hispanic culture, as they are with Herdez. In honor of those values, Herdez will sponsor a program from June through December, called Celebrando con Herdez. This celebration will have a variety of themes throughout its time frame, but each will focus on adding value to the Hispanic community through education on meal preparation, community activities and a promotion benefiting diabetes research.

Throughout the program, Herdez and the Independent Grocers of Los Angeles will team up to present product sampling, recipes, prizes and coupons. Prizes include: Weber grills and/or cookware, $100 and $50 grocery food gift certificates; L.A. Galaxy tickets; L.A. Dodgers tickets; amusement park admission tickets; CDs; and T-shirts. For the Hispanic Heritage theme in mid-September, the grand prize drawing will be for a home computer. Some of the participating grocers include: Superior Super Warehouse; Pioneer; Gigante Supermarkets; Notrica 32nd Markets; City Foods; Payless/Bargain Foods; Big Saver Foods; Beach Grocery; K.V. Mart; and Alpha Grocery Warehouse.

Highlights of these in-store events include a cooking demonstration by chef Mario Canela of El Picante Restaurant in Los Angeles, Fri., June 27, at the Superior Super Warehouse, located at 3600 Cesar E. Chavez Ave., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Canela will showcase tasty, convenient recipes perfect for summer entertaining. Canela also will be at K.V. Mart Fri., Oct. 3, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. He will focus on preparing authentic Mexican dishes and putting new twists on old favorites.

Hormel Foods “Mi Sabor” Soccer Clinic

This August, 60 Los Angeles-area children, ages 8 to 13, selected by winning in-store sweepstakes and radio call-ins, will have the unique opportunity to spend a full afternoon honing their soccer skills with L.A. Galaxy Soccer All-Stars Alexi Lalas and Carlos Ruiz. Lalas and Ruiz will host the Hormel Foods “Mi Sabor” Soccer Clinic, presented by Hormel Foods and Herdez, from 1-6 p.m., Aug. 10, 2003, at the University of Southern California’s McAlister Field. The clinic also will include activities for spectators with a festival environment of booths, giveaways and sampling. The public is invited to attend this free event to sample food and watch the soccer clinic.

Children can enter the sweepstakes at approximately 140 Los Angeles-area grocery stores, including Albertson’s, Cardenas Markets, El Super, K.V. Mart, Northgate Gonzalez Supermarkets, Payless Foods, R-Ranch, Superior Super Warehouse and Stater Brothers. The in-store sweepstakes begins June 11 and runs through July 8.

“Soccer is a great sport and the L.A. Galaxy is a well-accomplished team,” said Splinter. “We are happy to foster the growth of the sport and give the community great events to enjoy with friends and family.”
