Hispanic 50% of population growth with 21 States reported to date.
January 25, 2011
Telemundo announced a preliminary analysis of population data released by the Census Bureau. The Census has released Hispanic population data across twenty-one states, where the Hispanic population includes 19,349,070 people and represents 54% of the population growth. The numbers released by the Census represent 38.5% of the total U.S. population numbers reported.
Telemundo is reporting this data to inform on the profound impact that the growth of the U.S. Hispanic population will have on the media industry at large.
Of the twenty one released states, Texas, Colorado, Illinois and New Jersey are traditional Hispanic areas with growth of 20.6%, 16.9%, 3.3% and 4.5%, respectively, representing total population and Hispanic growth of 41.8%, 41.2%, 32.5% and 39.2%. Looking at the results for each state, it is clear that the growth among Hispanics is significantly outpacing total market growth, with Alabama now showing staggering percentage growth among Hispanics thus far. In absolute figures, the states that have added the most Hispanics since 2000 are Texas, Illinois, New Jersey and Nevada.
Hispanics have fueled growth in every state and have accounted for the majority of growth in Louisiana, New Jersey and Illinois, where the non-Hispanic growth declined from 2000 by .5% in Louisiana and .8% in both New Jersey and Illinois.
Hispanics also accounted for population growth exceeding 40% in other non-traditional states such as Iowa, Maryland, Oklahoma, Nevada, Indiana, Oregon, Colorado and Arkansas.
These figures begin to paint a picture of the staggering shifts in population and what will be considered the new Mainstream America when the complete Census results are revealed.
