May 28, 2005
Fox Sports en Español continues to build on what promises to be its strongest and most-watched Copa Toyota Libertadores season since the network acquired the property in 2002. According to Nielsen Media Research, the June 14 Copa Toyota Libertadores quarterfinal match featuring Las Chivas de Guadalajara and Boca Juniors of Argentina not only scored the network’s its highest ratings of all time, but it’s now the highest-rated and most-watched sports program in all of Spanish-language cable this year.
“We’re delivering broadcast sized numbers with a significantly smaller audience universe than the broadcast networks. Head to head, we out-delivered both Telemundo and Telefutura among M18-49 in the time period. Results like these send a strong signal about our viewers’ clear preference for the quality and depth of sports programming than only Fox Sports en Español offers,” said David Sternberg, executive vice president and general manager of Fox Sports en Español. “We’re tremendously energized about the wonderful results we’ve achieved thus far and look forward to delivering our advertisers consistently strong results through the final rounds of the tournament, as well as providing Hispanic sports fans extraordinary coverage of the most exciting match-ups in the weeks to come.”
The second-leg semifinal match between Chivas and Boca Juniors scored Fox Sports en Español the highest delivery of any sports program on Spanish-language cable this year. From 8-10:30 pm on June 14, the network delivered an average of 453,000 Hispanic households, the equivalent of a 4.2 national HH rating. Among M18-49, delivery peaked at 429,000 for a solid 4.1 national Hispanic rating. The network delivered 307,000 M 18-34, for a national Hispanic rating of 4.7. Within Fox Sports en Español’s cable coverage universe of 3.4 million Hispanic households, the match delivered a 35 share of M18-49 and a 40 share of M18-34.
Previously, the June 2 first-leg of the Chivas vs. Boca Juniors semifinal duel scored Fox Sports en Español an impressive 2.8 national Hispanic Household rating and reached 304,000 Hispanic households for a first-place finish among all Spanish-language cable programs for the week of May 30 through June 5.
Fox Sports en Español’s Copa Toyota Libertadores 2005 – By the Numbers Halfway through 2005, and with only two more rounds of heart-stopping action left in Latin America’s most prestigious soccer tournament, five telecasts of Fox Sports en Español’s Copa Toyota Libertadores already rank among the 10 most-watched sports programs in Spanish-language cable this year (among men 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54).
Through the semifinals, coverage area ratings for Fox Sports en Español’s exclusive telecasts of the Copa Toyota Libertadores have increased upwards of 36 percent for men 18-49 and men 18-34. While 2005 viewership for marquee matches featuring Mexican teams have unquestionably led the network to some of its highest ratings of all time, non-Mexican games have netted the network an average ratings increase of 45 percent among men 18-49 and men 18-34, respectively.
