Hugo “El Gordo” Cadelago passes

In today’s US Hispanic focused radio industry, many of the names of the pioneers that help develop, create and establish the US Hispanic Radio Industry are almost all forgotten, but not to a few.

Hugo Cadelago or “El Gordo Cadelago” was an on-air pioneer.  He originated from Mendoza, Argentina and played a pivotal role on radio stations such as KEYH-AM in Houston, KLAT-AM in Houston and KXYZ-AM in Houston, followed by stints on WJIT-AM in New York, Radio Unica Network and KTNQ-AM in Los Angeles.

His last role as an on-air talent was on La Invasora 1600 AM in New York.  Hugo passed away this week and for those of us who knew him as I did, he help launch careers such as mine allowing me to better understand Radio and helping me leapfrog into a fabulous National Radio career with companies such as Caballero Spanish Media, Katz Communications and Entravision.  I worked with the best of the best and the experience of working local radio in Houston with El Gordo Cadelago gave me a key understand of serving the listener, the advertisers and the employees of the station or company.

A truly unique, insightful and kind person, El Gordo Cadelago filled up a room.

El “Gordo’ Cadelago, even though the years have passed, the memories have not.  I will miss you.
