Intellectual Leaders gather In Mexico City to focus on ‘The City Of The Future’.

Academics, students, entrepreneurs and internationally acclaimed scientists, including five Nobel Prize Laureates, gathered in Mexico City for the 2009 Week of Science and Innovation (Semana de la Ciencia y la Innovacion 2009). The symposium, which commenced on September 21st and was organized by Mexico City’s government, is an annual event designed to explore the solutions to the most pressing problems of the world’s second largest metropolis.

The event’s main objective was to bring together the world’s most brilliant academics and national and foreign entrepreneurs with local government officials to explore scientific and technological solutions for raising the quality of life for Mexico City’s residents.

The Institute of Science and Technology of Mexico City organized the event around four main themes:

— Healthy City;
— Sustainable City;
— Connected and Technologically Equipped City; and
— Science and Technology Literate City.

“These four themes represent Mexico City’s four most important priorities. We aim to be each one of these four cities in order to achieve the highest level of development for our people and to attract foreign visitors and investors,” said Dr. Esther Orozco, Director General of the Institute of Science and Technology of Mexico City.

Dr. Orozco added that all of the viable ideas proposed at the symposium would become public policy.

“There’s political will and commitment to see these proposals — many of which are brilliant — become a reality for Mexico City,” said Dr. Orozco.
