It is Not a Car Wash; it is a Wheelchair Wash!
June 26, 2005
With the upcoming 15TH Anniversary of the Disability Act, Familia Unida Wheelchair Wash celebration will kick-off with hundreds of disabled residences, and community volunteers armed with soap and water. White Memorial Medical Center will sponsor the Second Familia Unida Wheelchair Wash on July 31 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at White Memorial Medical Center located at 1701 Cesar Chavez Avenue in Boyle Heights, California.
The celebration will offer free cleaning and wash of manual or electric wheel chairs and power scooters. Beauty experts will give free haircuts and makeovers; while local musical performers will provide a special serenade of songs to participants at the event.
“The Disability Acts is the single most important piece of legislation prohibiting private employers, state and local governments, employment agencies and labor unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities,” said Irma Resendez, president and founder of Familia Unida Living with MS. There are an estimated 1.9 million people in Southern California living with a disability. “This event will help bring awareness to the growing number of people living with a disability and the importance of embracing the diversity of people that make up our communities”. Our mission “You are not alone – No Estas Solo” will reinforce the importance of inclusion of all people.
Entertainment and beauty experts will join to make this event a special day for the entire family. In addition to White Memorial Medical Center, event sponsors will provide volunteer support, goodies and important health care and community resource information. Advance registration is recommended to insure participation. To register, call Familia Unida at 323.261.5565 by July 28, 2005. Some of the event sponsors include: Union Bank of California, Blue Cross of California, the Montebello Beauty School, Hoy Newspaper, ABC Channel 7, KMEX-TV Channel 34/Univision, Richard Villa and Amigos from the Latinos Night Comedians/Hollywood Improv, Hispanic PR Wire and Southern California Gas Company and much more!
