July 31, 2004
Familia Unida Living with Multiple Sclerosis, is the first bilingual English-Spanish multiple sclerosis nonprofit organization in the United States, will present the lifetime achievement award to Jose Jose at its annual awards reception on Thursday, November 4, 2004. Event hosted at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.
Jose Jose is known throughout Latin America as “The King of Song” for his romantic serenades and recipient of 26 platinum records in a career spanning more than four decades. As a testament to his commitment to public service and the community, Jose Jose was one of the artists who recorded the Spanish version of “We are The World” together with great artist like Celia Cruz and others to benefit the African continent.
He participated in numerous concerts benefiting serious social and health care issues in our community. Some of these events are Navidad en el Barrio, Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy and the benefit concert to build a hospital for patients with alcoholism and drug addiction in Mexico. He was selected “Mr. Amigo” in 1984, award granted year after year to popular figures, who in one way or another do something in favor of friendship between Mexico and the US.
Jose Jose said, “I am most honored by this award. Familia Unida Living with MS plays a growing and increasingly vital role in giving back opportunities to the nation’s disability residents across the country. I strongly support this organization’s mission and look forward to working with Irma Resendez so more people can benefit.”
According to Irma Resendez, founder of Familia Unida Living with MS, “Jose Jose serves as a role model. His success has earned him a leadership role among Latino community. The qualities that make him successful are his vision, concern for the community and ability to motivate others through his music. For these distinct qualities make him especially worthy of our
lifetime achievement award.”
