Kellogg Launches Hispanic Music Scholarship Program.

Only seven percent of students currently enrolled in four-year colleges are Hispanic*. Studies say one reason for the low Hispanic representation in colleges and universities may be that many Hispanic high school students are not aware of the college scholarship opportunities available to them**. Kellogg Company has taken a leadership role in combating these problems by partnering with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) to award a total of $35,000 in scholarships to Hispanic college-bound high school students.

“One of the pressing issues facing the Hispanic community today is the lack of high school students making the transition to college,” said Angel Colon, Kellogg’s senior manager of ethnic marketing. “Kellogg Company is proud to work with the HSF to further higher education among U.S. Hispanics. Music has always been an important part of the Hispanic experience. Through the Musi Kellogg’s tour and the HSF, Kellogg is able to give back to the community in a meaningful way, while helping to develop Hispanic musical talent.”

By teaming up with HSF, the premier Hispanic educational organization in the United States, Kellogg has selected an ideal partner to further its goal of promoting higher education within this community. “The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is very proud to have corporate partners supporting our efforts to encourage young Hispanic students to strive for a college education,” said Sara Martinez Tucker, president and chief executive officer of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. “We are grateful to Kellogg for helping HSF advance its scholarship and outreach efforts.”

A $5000 check from the Kellogg Company will be presented to an HSF representative at each of the seven stops on the Musi Kellogg’s 2004 tour, which will run from August to September. HSF will then select two Hispanic students in each market to receive $2,500 to put towards the pursuit of a college degree in music.

While the scholarship program supports the future of Latin music, the tour itself will feature some of today’s hottest names in Latin entertainment, including Ricardo Montaner, Franco De Vita, Los Temerarios, Christian Castro, Obie Bermudez and Ana Barbara.
