Kids, Older Boomers Growing The $3 Billion First Aid & Sports Medicine Product Markets.

Manufacturers of first aid products are finding a major growth opportunity among opposite ends of the population spectrum, namely, kids and aging baby boomers. The U.S. Market for First Aid and Sports Medicine Products, a new report by market research publisher Packaged Facts, notes that product innovations like colorful bandages featuring cartoon characters for kids and waterproof pain relief ointments for sports-injured middle-agers are fueling this $3.03 billion market.

Statistics show that one in five children participating in a sport or recreational activity will experience an injury, most commonly a sprain or strain that will need treatment. Baby boomers are more active than previous generations in the same age group, resulting in net increases in cuts, bruises, insect bites and so on that require attention. These trends are good news for manufacturers, whose bandages, braces, ointments and other products are ready to meet consumer demand.

“Innovation in product design and function is driving the first aid/sports medicine market,” said Don Montuori, Acquisitions Editor for Packaged Facts. “The basic aim of these products has remained fairly constant over time – healing a minor injury. It’s the way these new products go about achieving that goal that’s causing excitement, and, consequently, sales.”
