La Opinion – 23 years preserving & supporting the Arts in Schools.
October 29, 2007
La Opinión will hold it’s 23rd Annual Children’s Art Awards Ceremony on Dec. 1st at Santee Educational Complex in downtown Los Angeles.
American artist, activist and UCLA fine arts professor, Judy Baca, will be the ceremonial event’s keynote speaker. Baca is the co-founder and executive director of the Venice, CA-based Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC), and is best known as the director of the mural project that created one of the largest murals in the world, the Great Wall of Los Angeles.
“The Arts are one of the most important areas for our young people to concentrate on, and one of the most rewarding of careers because it’s essentially the work of the soul. As artists we create the music, images and words that capture the spirit of the time we’re living in,” said Judy Baca.
Now in its 23rd year, La Opinión’s annual Children’s Art Contest has grown into a much-anticipated program and event intended to generate artistic enthusiasm amongst children, teachers, parents, principals, and sponsors alike.
“We are very proud of La Opinion’s 23 year history of supporting and encouraging the arts through the annual Children’s Art Calendar. The scholarships we offer to these 100 talented winners provide them with formal study and a chance to further develop their creativity and imagination,” said Monica Lozano, CEO and Publisher of La Opinión newspaper.
Each year thousands of children in the LAUSD area from kindergarten through 6th grade enter to win 1 of 100 art scholarships to the Los Angeles Music and Art School. On Dec. 1st, at Santee Educational Complex, 100 students will receive a 3-month scholarship on behalf of La Opinión. The Children’s Art Contest has awarded nearly 2,000 individual art scholarships since its inception.
