La Opinión etrusts 80 Years of news archives to the Huntington Library.

Historical materials and archives of the 80-year-old Spanish-language newspaper La Opinión will be transferred to The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens.

The donation of the La Opinión archives is part of a series of events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the publication. Founded by Ignacio Lozano, a Mexican immigrant and grandfather of the current publisher, the daily newspaper has published continuously since 1926 and has accumulated a wealth of materials dating back to the early days of publication.

“As La Opinión is celebrating its 80th anniversary, we want to make sure that our news archives are well preserved and accessible to scholars and those interested in the rich history of Los Angeles’ Latino community”, CEO and Publisher Monica Lozano said. “For eight decades, La Opinión has been committed to informing readers and serving the Hispanic community with high-quality journalism. We want these historical materials to be available to the future generations.”

“The Huntington is delighted to have been selected as the repository for La Opinión’s archives,” said Steven S. Koblik, Huntington President. “This is a wealth of information defining the history of Los Angeles and California for more than 80 years. Scholars and students affiliated with our new Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West along with many others will benefit richly from being able to conduct their research using this new collection.”

The materials include photographs, newspapers, memorabilia, awards and original documents. The historical material will be housed in the 90,000 square-foot Munger Research Center, the newest building of the Huntington’s library complex, which opened to scholars in 2004.
