La Opinión & Mexico’s Ovaciones Create Sports Section.
May 14, 2004
La Opinión and Ovaciones have signed an agreement to include a special sports insert in La Opinión that will cover the most prominent sports events in Mexico and Central America.
This important new partnership of two major media companies positions La Opinión not only as a primary source of sports information from Mexico and Central America, but also establishes the newspaper as a critical gateway for Mexican and Central American companies to communicate directly with the expanding U.S. Hispanic market.
With its extensive network of reporters throughout Mexico and Central America, Ovaciones will publish a special edition every Saturday in the sports section of La Opinión that will provide in-depth coverage of all related sports stories from both regions, with a special emphasis on soccer.
“Through our partnership with Grupo Pegaso and Ovaciones, we will be able to provide La Opinión readers with even greater coverage of sports from throughout Mexico and Central America,” said Monica Lozano, Publisher and CEO of La Opinión. “Our readers closely follow sports around the world and count on us to bring them the most updated and provocative information about the games, teams and athletes they care about. With Ovaciones every Saturday, we can provide more comprehensive sports coverage than ever before. Grupo Pegaso, in return, is afforded an extraordinary opportunity to reach an unprecedented number of new readers.”
“Our commitment starting today will be to strengthen the successful U.S.
Hispanic newspaper La Opinión, which in turn will help us build our own ability to communicate with millions of readers in the Hispanic community,”
said Miguel Angel Couchonnal Miranda, President and General Director of Ovaciones. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved, especially the readers.”
One of Grupo Pegaso’s main priorities this year has been to reach out to the growing U.S. Hispanic market. In this endeavor, WAU, Grupo Pegaso’s commercial division, reached out to La Opinión and after several months, concluded that the best way to reach this market was to publish a specialized sports insert tailored for Southern California Latinos every Saturday.
“Given our extensive knowledge of the U.S. Hispanic market, WAU has explored various marketing techniques for the past 18 months to launch Ovaciones in the United States. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with the leading U.S. Hispanic newspaper, La Opinión whose leadership and commitment to the Hispanic community makes them an ideal partner for Group Pegaso,” emphasized Javier Braun Burillo, CEO of WAU.
Lozano went on to emphasize the newspaper’s leadership and commitment to its readers. “La Opinión is the #1 Spanish-language newspaper in terms of journalism, readership and revenue. Our circulation has grown 26% since 1999; we have the largest share of advertising of all U.S. Spanish-language newspapers; and we continue to receive national acclaim for our editorial content, design and individual talent. We are fully committed to continuing to strengthen every section and every aspect of La Opinión, from our Sports coverage with Ovaciones, to Business and Entertainment & Style.
Our readers deserve the best and that’s what we strive to provide each and every day.”
