La Preciosa Network Goes Silent On May 1,
March 24, 2006
According to Radio & Records magazine, as a sign of support for what is being labeled by protest organizers as “A Day Without Latinos” and by others as “A Day Without A Mexican,” La Preciosa Network’s on-air staff will not speak on the air on May 1. That means KBFP/Bakersfield; KEGL/Dallas; KFSO/Fresno; WGBT/Greensboro; KWID/Las Vegas; WLPP/Louisville; KMRQ/Modesto, CA; KPRC/Monterey; KDIF/Riverside; KNFX/Rochester, MN; XOCL/San Diego; KSJO/San Francisco-San Jose; KMSY/San Luis Obispo, CA; KPSE/Santa Barbara, CA; KWSL/Sioux City, IA; KTZR/Tucson; and KIZS/Tulsa will be jockless on that day.
La Preciosa Network PD and air personality Alex “El Genio” Lucas said, “As the morning host for the La Preciosa Network, words are my life. But sometimes silence makes a bigger point. Many of our listeners will be observing ‘A Day Without a Mexican’ and our silence is a way of saying, ‘we hear you.'”
Some of the organizations that organized the immigration protest marches of the last few weeks are calling for a boycott on May 1. Those who want participate are being asked not buy any products, go to school or work on that day. The term “A Day Without a Mexican” is borrowed from a 2004 motion picture comedy in which Hispanics suddenly vanish from the state of California.
