The local consumer market isn’t growing.

Where in the world is the Puerto Rico economy going? That has become THE question for companies on the island, after suffering through seven-straight years of negative growth in Puerto Rico’s gross domestic product (GDP), and going into the eighth.
The latest Economic Activity Index, from the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico (GDB), showed an additional 3.5% decline from April 2012 compared with the same month this year. The index, an indicator of future economic activity— not to be confused with the GDP statistic—showed the economy starting a slow ascent from July 2010 to last August, and then doing an about-face and renewing its decline.
