Los Angeles Salsa Congress Draws Dancers From Around the World.

Albert Torres Productions will present The 3rd Annual West Coast Salsa Congress at the Hollywood Park Casino May 25 through 27, 2001, this Memorial Day weekend, honoring Grammy Award winner and Latin music icon Cachao.

The 3rd Annual West Coast Salsa Congress is dedicated to “Creating Unity Through Salsa.” This year’s event will bring over 3000 dancers from forty countries to Los Angeles to dance and celebrate Latin culture with over a thousand locals.

The 3rd Annual West Coast Salsa Congress will honor Latin music legend Cachao, who will also be presenting a special workshop during the day Saturday, May 26, and will be performing later that evening. Adding to the festivities will be local celebrity Andy Garcia and Councilman Nate Holden on hand to present Cachao with a commendation from the City of Los Angeles for his contributions to music. Prior to kicking-off the activities of the 3rd Annual West Coast Salsa Congress, a press conference will be held at the Hollywood Park Casino. Scheduled to attend the press conference will be Councilman Nate Holden and Cachao, dedicating the City of Inglewood to “Creating Unity Through Salsa” week, details of which to be announced.

Other Latin entertainment professionals being honored this year with Cachao are Richard Bonilla, Armando Castro, David Melendez and Joby and Luis Vazquez. Also scheduled to perform direct from Puerto Rico is 13-year-old prodigy and timbale sensation Manolo, who will pay tribute and honor to the late great Tito Puente who helped to kick-off the first year festivities of the West Coast Salsa Congress.

The 3rd Annual West Coast Salsa Congress will feature dancing from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. nightly to performances by Cachao, Roberto Roena Y El Apollo Sound, Hermanos Moreno, Julio Bravo Y Su Orquesta, and Johnny Polanco Y Su Conjunto Amistad. Nightly dance performances will feature many of Salsa’s superstars from around the world, including world-renowned Latin Dance icons Palladium Mambo Legends, and unique performers from around the world such as The Salsa Lovers teaching Rueda Casino from Miami, Salsa Brava from Los Angeles, Salsa Academy from South Korea, Saoco from Argentina, Salsa with Attitude from Singapore and direct from Hiroshima Salsa Sunrize among other dance teams from around the world.

In addition to the adult dance teams being presented, a large contingency of youth dance teams will be performing such as L.A. Salsa Kids, Young Ambition, Side Street Kids, Hearbreak Boyz, and The Jr. Hearbreak Boyz. A raffle will be held during The 3rd Annual West Coast Salsa Congress, the proceeds of which will be distributed among the youth dance teams attending. Andy Garcia will be donating a signed copy of his documentary for the raffle that chronicles the life of Cachao entitled “Como Mi Ritmo No Hay Dos” among other prizes.

Professional instructors will host thirty beginner, intermediate and advanced dance workshops all day Saturday and Sunday, beginning with a Cardio Salsa workout. The 3rd Annual West Coast Salsa Congress has garnered a reputation among salsa lovers and dancers as the United Nations of Salsa, with over forty countries being represented at this year’s event.
