June 30, 2007
Pierluigi Gazzolo, President, MTV Networks Latin America at a joint press conference with Mexico City’s Governor, Marcelo Ebrard, announced that Los Premios MTV Latin America ’07 will take place at Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes on Thursday, October 18th. The event will air live on MTV Latin America and on MTV Tr3s in the U.S. Gazzolo also announced that international pop superstar Avril Lavigne and Mexican rock icons Café Tacvba will perform.
“We’re thrilled about returning to Mexico City,” said Gazzolo. “Last year’s show was not just an award show; it was a mega music concert with an eclectic mix of international, regional and local artists that truly reflected the tastes, culture and attitude of our audience. The event was a great opportunity for our clients and talent and we’re very proud of what we accomplished. We look forward to the challenge of topping last year’s production with more incredible music and creativity.”
Los Premios MTV Latin America 2007 will air live on MTV Latin America to more than 22 countries across the region and on MTV Tr3s in the US to 28 million households. The show will also be seen on other MTVs around the world and on select broadcast stations throughout Latin America, details of which will be announced shortly.
MTV Latin America and the government of Mexico City have partnered to bring Los Premios MTV 2007 back to the City for a second year. “Last year, our partnership with the Government provided us with unprecedented support to ensure a smooth and well executed event, commented Gazzolo. “We truly value this venture and are confident it will bring both parties much success.”
International pop star Avril Lavigne, who just released her third album, “The Best Damn Thing”, will perform live at the show. Lavigne’s album marks a return to the bratty, spunky punk-pop of her first album “Let Go ”. “The Best Damn Thing” debuted at number one on the Billboard charts the week of its release, and has been consistently on top of MTV’s charts.
Also set to perform is Mexican rock band Café Tacuba. Known for their stylistic diversity and creative strides, Los Premios MTV will be one of their first televised performances after the release of their upcoming album in October 2007.
In addition to musical performances, this year’s show will feature new award categories, pro-social components as well as live interactive elements details of which will be announced.
Coca-Cola, DHL, Movistar, Converse, Smirnoff and Modelo will sponsor Los Premios MTV 2007. This year marks Coca-Cola’s sixth year sponsoring the event and is the second year for Converse and Smirnoff. Details of sponsorship activities will be announced soon.
Nominees for the Premios MTV are selected by a “Music and Video Academy” comprised of music industry professionals and fans. Winners for each category are chosen by viewers’ votes through MTV Latin America’s website.
