Media Monitors Special Advertiser Report: 2008

The biggest advertisers of 2008 came from a variety of categories, but the TOP TWENTY list was certainly driven by ads for Television and Cable TV, Automotive Sales and Service and Fast Food. This list was compiled from monitors in 77 Radio markets, 35 TV and Cable markets and 40 Newspaper markets were surveyed in the USA from Jan 1, 2008 to December 14, 2008:

TOP TWENTY RADIO ADVERTISERS IN 2008

The #1 advertiser on the radio in 2008 was the HD DIGITAL RADIO ALLIANCE with 1,697,082 spots. Coming in #2 was WAL-MART with 1,648,819 spots, while GEICO was #3 with 1,563,532 commercials. #4 was VERIZON running 1,248,253 ads and HOME DEPOT was #5 with their 1,221,153 announcements. MCDONALD’S locked up #6 with 1,000,720 spots, while AT&T was #7 running 692,014 spots. AUTOZONE was #8 with 643,747 spots and TOYOTA was #19 with 555,340 spots. The #10 position was held by FORD LINCOLN MERCURY who ran 475,354 spots.

TOP TWENTY TV ADVERTISERS IN 2008

The #1 advertiser on TV in 2008 was ABC TELEVISION NETWORK with 501,867 spots. #2 was the joint venture between Warner Brothers and CBS, CW TELEVISION NETWORK ran 415,477 spots on TV to promote their network. CBS TELEVISION NETWORK in at #3 with 414,107 spots, while NBC TELEVISION NETWORK, appropriately was #4 with 377,525 spots. VERIZON was #5 with 314,976 spots and THE FOX TELEVISION NETWORK was in at #6 airing 309,957 ads. #7 was TOYOTA running 299,305 spots, while AT&T was #8 with 256,467 commercials. #9 – MCDONALD’S was lovin’ TV with 256,340 spots, while the carpet company EMPIRE TODAY came in #10 with 251,739 spots.

TOP TWENTY CABLE ADVERTISERS IN 2008

The #1 advertiser on Cable was a cable network, TNT – TURNER NETWORK TELEVISION with their amazing 1,327,863 spots on Cable. Coming in #2, was their sister channel, TBS with 1,223,858 spots. #3 was the DISCOVERY CHANNEL with 1,221,044 spots, while the LIFETIME network held down #4 with 1,179,094 commercials. #5 was the A&E NETWORK with 1,036,000 spots and the USA NETWORK was #6 with 998,489 spots. CNN was the 7th largest advertiser on cable with 569,705 announcements, while GEICO was #8 with 565,003 spots. FORD LINCOLN MERCURY was #9 with 556,729 spots and AT&T was #10 running 505,399 spots. It is clear that cable TV channels believe in cable.

TOP TWENTY NEWSPAPER ADVERTISERS IN 2008

The #1 advertiser in Newspaper was MACY’S with 19,492 ads. Coming in #2 was DILLARD’S with 8,537 ads, while VERIZON was #3 buying 7,606 ads. FRY’S ELECTRONICS was #4 with 3,910 ads and AT&T was #6 with 3,167 ads. AMC THEATRES came in #6 with their 2,568 ads, while BLOOMINGDALE’S went heavy print with 2,250 ads. CHAMPION was #8 with 2,002 ads and ROOMS TO GO was #9 with 1,935 ads. Coming in #10 was WASHINGTON MUTUAL with a total of 1,829 ads.
