Media in Transition: Current Issues and Future Challenges For Students.

Journalism students are invited to attend the Dallas/Fort Worth Network of Hispanic Communicators’ 11th annual workshop for aspiring journalists on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the University of Texas at Arlington.

This one-day workshop, “Media in Transition: Current Issues and Future Challenges,” is a great opportunity for students interested in reporting and/or production to get hands-on experience from working journalists and media professionals. The workshop is held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Fine Arts Building on the UTA campus. College/university students are invited to attend as well as high school seniors and juniors, who are considering a career in communications.

Among this year’s workshop topics are “Getting your Foot in the Door: Whatever it Takes?” “Behind the Scenes: Newspaper Production,” “Sports & Entertainment: Is it Journalism,” and “Beyond the Spin: Insights in Public Relations.” In addition, the workshop gives students an opportunity to participate in a writing contest, where they will attend a news conference, ask questions and write their story. The students’ work will be critiqued, and prizes will be awarded to the top entries.

“This is a great opportunity for students to learn from reporters, broadcasters and media professionals, and understand the essentials that can help them begin their careers in communications,” said Michael Vega, workshop coordinator and a member of the D/FW Network of Hispanic Communicators. “The workshop is aimed at communication students who desire to learn more about the profession and meet contacts that can help them along the way.”

During lunch, students will be involved in a discussion on ethics and will be encouraged to discuss real-life ethical situations that occur in newsrooms. Additional workshops are scheduled in the afternoon, followed by a closing
reception where the writing contest winners will be announced.
