The Borinqueneers.

The experience of Latinos in the U.S. Army has rarely been portrayed in film. Now comes The Borinqueneers (pronounced Boh-rin-keh-neers), the never-before-told story of the 65th Puerto Rican Regiment, the only all-Hispanic unit in the history of the U.S. Army.

8th New York International Latino Film Festival.

The 8th Annual New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) announced its Premieres line-up of the latest and best in U.S. Hispanic and Latin American cinema. The festival runs from July 24 – 29, 2007, and opens with TRADE, a raw and powerful film on international human trafficking, and closes with EL CANTANTE, a salsa music epic starring Marc Anthony as the legendary Hector Lavoe, and Jennifer Lopez as his wife. Other premiere films feature some of the most impressive talent in the industry, such as Wilmer Valderrama, Kate del Castillo, Eduardo Verástegui, Manny Perez and Victor Rasuk.

Antonio Aguilar ‘EL CHUBASCO’ passes.

Mexican icon, singer and actor Antonio Aguilar who simbolized the Mexican cinema for many of us had passed. He had suffered a prolonged battle with pneumonia.

To encourage the next generation of Female Filmmakers.

Lifetime Movie Network (LMN), The Hollywood Reporter, New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT), William Morris Agency and Women In Film Los Angeles launched the LMN Student Filmmaker Competition, a national competition designed to encourage and discover the next generation of female filmmakers. Judged by an elite panel of producers, directors, executives and actors from the Hollywood community, the competition will select outstanding short films produced by female film students from across the country.

4th HBO/NYILFF Short Film Competition.

HBO and The New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) announced the 4th annual open call for entry for the HBO/NYILFF Short Film Competition. The competition, created in 2004, seeks to foster films by Latino filmmakers and/or about the Latino experience.

23rd Chicago Latino Film Festival.

‘Padre Nuestro’ earns top award at Sundance.

The jury and audience award-winners of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival were announced at the Festival’s closing Awards Ceremony in Park City, Utah.

The Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic was given to PADRE NUESTRO, directed by Christopher Zalla. Fleeing a criminal past, Juan hops a truck transporting illegal immigrants from Mexico to New York City, where he meets Pedro, who is seeking his rich father.

Celebrating eight years of Latino cinematic excellence, the New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) announces its open call for applicant entries for film submissions. The New York International Latino Film Festival is now looking for films of all genres for its 2007 film festival. The deadline is Saturday March 31, 2007.

Sol Dance arrives to Park City.

Sol Dance Film Fiesta 2007’s groundbreaking three-day event will screen independent films by Latino and Native American filmmakers. Sol Dance will present from January 21-23 at the new Dolce’s Zermatt Resort and Spa in Midway, Utah, just 20 minutes down the road from the Sundance strip.

Mercury Latino Lens Short Film Challenge.

Two up-and-coming filmmakers took away top prizes in the Mercury Latino Lens Short Film Challenge at an exclusive event at Quixote Studios in West Hollywood. Actor Danny Pino, who most recently starred in Andy Garcia’s epic “The Lost City” and plays Detective Scotty Valens in the hit TV series “Cold Case,” hosted the event.

UCLA School of Law study finds limited opportunities for Non-White Actors.

A new study of entertainment industry casting, conducted by the UCLA School of Law and UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, finds that Latino, black, Asian American and Native American actors have few acting opportunities available to them. The study’s author also challenged the legality of race-specific casting announcements and suggested that actors may have legal recourse in federal law that prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

The Vatican to Host premiere of the Nativity Story.

On Sunday, November 26th, New Line Cinema’s The Nativity Story will become the first feature film ever to premiere at the Vatican, it was jointly announced by New Line’s President and COO of Worldwide Distribution and Marketing Rolf Mittweg, and Stefano Dammicco, CEO of Eagle Pictures, the film’s Italian distributor. The Nativity Story is scheduled for a Dec. 1, 2006 release in the U.S., and will open in territories worldwide throughout the month of December.

Hollywood Familia.

Entertainment owner and CEO Frank Aragon and his new partner Ken Sitnick are seeking backing for their up and coming theatrical release of Hollywood Familia. The film will open in limited release on Dec 8, 2006 in Los Angeles, Calif. in order to qualify for nomination consideration in the 79th Annual Academy Awards (AMPAS). The Latin/Jewish duo produced the picture earlier this year.
