How many years have been “the year” mobile advertising finally catches up to the massive growth in consumer time spent on mobile? As you marinate on that question, take a second also to reflect on how often you’ve read the headline that “this is the year” digital advertising dollars finally catch up with the amount of time consumers are spending with digital media. It’s become a cliché at this point.
(Spoiler alert: digital advertising still hasn’t caught up with the amount of time people spend there.)

“Who cares!?! Have you seen how fast mobile usage is growing!??!?!!”

Sigh…

Telemundo announced the return of international TV personality and fashion mogul Daisy Fuentes and renowned entertainment anchor Jorge Bernal as hosts of “La Voz Kids,” the highly anticipated Sunday night reality show, set to premiere in the spring of 2014.

Some 73% of online adults now use a social networking site of some kind. Facebook is the dominant social networking platform in the number of users, but a striking number of users are now diversifying onto other platforms. Some 42% of online adults now use multiple social networking sites. In addition, Instagram users are nearly as likely as Facebook users to check in to the site on a daily basis.

When you really deconstruct true viral video, you see that it’s not really a marketers’ game. Fundamentally, most truly viral videos aren’t trying to sell a product, which can be a deterrent for the audience. Most went viral unexpectedly. Most had few, if any, media dollars pumped into them for seeding. It’s difficult to plan viral. It’s difficult to formulate it. And it’s sure as heck difficult to sell a product alongside it.

Mobile migration is probably the story of 2013. Everything from news consumption to social media to porn eschewed the static and generally inconvenient desktop experience for the convenience and flexibility of devices. The data and targeting industries will be spending years catching up with the accelerated pace of this move.

The NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations announced it has completed the acquisition of KTLM-TV, the Telemundo affiliate licensed to Rio Grande City, Texas, serving the Harlingen-Weslaco-Brownsville area.

As 2013 draws to a close, and the Social Media Insider unleashes below the first in a two-part series of predictions, what strikes me about social media is how established it is. It certainly doesn’t feel new anymore. Maybe a better word for how it feels is — embedded.
