The Digital Television Switch – Impact and Update.

The June 12 transition to digital broadcasting was an important milestone for all of us who work in the television industry. For Nielsen, the transition went very smoothly thanks to a year of planning and the close cooperation of our broadcast clients.

Wireless Internet Use

An April 2009 survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project shows that 56% of adult Americans have accessed the internet by wireless means, such as using a laptop, mobile device, game console, or MP3 player. The most prevalent way people get online using a wireless network is with a laptop computer; 39% of adults have done this.

Accessing the internet is for many Americans now a multiplatform affair. Just a few years ago, desktop or laptop computers were typical onramps to the internet for the tech-oriented crowd. The digerati, already accustomed to lugging their laptops around in search of ports for their Ethernet cables, rushed to equip their computers with wireless cards so they could take advantage of WiFi links to the net.

Fox Sports en Espanol launches Tribuna Fox Sports.

Fox Sports en Espanol announced the launch of Tribuna Fox Sports, an interactive new program debuting on July 27th that will focus on Mexican soccer and the latest developments of the Mexican National Team.

Brands aren’t doing enough to Engage Consumers on Social Platforms.

A new report published by Razorfish indicates that about 33 percent of consumers are not connecting with brands on social networks — creating a large, untapped audience for marketers willing to adapt to the social world. Fluent: The Razorfish Social Influence Marketing Report urges marketers to change the way they build relationships with consumers by abandoning one-way messaging and engaging with them on an authentic, personal level.

As we’re about to put our first wise Latina on the U.S. Supreme Court, it is somewhat serendipitous that I’d been planning for some time to write about the U.S. Hispanic online marketplace. It is an interesting and fast-growing space, distinctly different from the general market, and too, distinctly different from offline U.S. Hispanic media marketplaces.

More than Half the homes in U.S. have three or more TVs.

This year about 54% of homes in the U.S. had more than 3 or more television sets, 28% had 2 television sets and only 18% had 1 television set.
