Spanish Broadcasting System has flipped their KXOL-FM to Latino 96.3 in Los Angeles.
Latino 96.3 is now a Hispanic 12-17 year old urban/hip-hop/rap radio station competing against mainstream hip-hop/rap stations, moving away from its traditional core of older Hispanic consumers.
Forty-seven percent of consumers say that they would listen to a radio station “a lot more” if that station had noticeably fewer commercial breaks, while 44 percent say that they would listen “a lot more” if that station had shorter commercial breaks. These findings are from Spot Load Study 2005: Managing Radio Commercials for Advertisers and Listeners a new study of consumer attitudes toward radio commercials conducted by Arbitron Inc. and Edison Media Research.
The number of Spanish-language radio stations in the country are at an all-time high, according to Hispanic Radio Today: How America Listens to Radio 2005 Edition by Arbitron Inc.
The study shows that while the number of Hispanics living in the U.S. is rapidly growing, now representing 14 percent of the population, accordingly so is the number of Spanish-language radio stations, which is at 678 – the highest to date. Among these stations, the most popular radio formats among Hispanics are Mexican Regional (17.9 percent), followed by Spanish Contemporary (11.3 percent) and Spanish Tropical (7.9 percent).
Liberman Broadcasting owners and operators of KRCA-TV Channel 62 in Los Angeles began a billboard campaign using the slogan Los Angeles, Mexico. By crossing out the CA in red and rewriting “Mexico”, they are promoting the relationship between Hispanics in Los Angeles and Mexico.

Digital audio formats, like satellite radio, online radio, and podcasting — subscription-based programming that is pushed to MP3 players — are creating new business models and opportunities in radio and the music industry.
Satellite Radio will reach more than 20.1 million U.S. households by 2010–up from a reported 4.5 million subscribers at the end of 2004, according to a Forrester Research report released this week. The report, which examines the emergent digital audio space, found that satellite radio subscriptions grew 150 percent in the United States from 2003 to 2004.

Yet another reporter from yet another “prestige” publication has leapt onto the “bash radio” bandwagon wielding impressions rather than facts. WFAN announced that beginning on Saturday, April 9 (time to vary), Roberto Clemente Jr. will join the WFAN on air staff as host of a new weekly show, ‘The Latin Beat’. Joining Clemente Jr. will be co-host Tanyette Colon. The pair will talk Mets and Yankees baseball, while also taking a look at how baseball impacts the Latin community in the Metropolitan New York area.
