Mediafax published the Official Mediafax TV Universe population estimates for the Year 2005. These estimates are effective with the January 2005 Mediafax TV Audience Reporting Period that began on Monday, January 3, 2005. Mediafax Year 2005 TV Universe Estimates (“UE”) are utilized in both daily overnight and monthly Mediafax TV Audience reports from Monday, January 3, 2005 until Sunday, January 1, 2006, the last day of the December 2005 reporting period.
I. Background
The 2005 update of the US Census 2000 Population Estimates is the twelfth annual Puerto Rico universe update published by Mediafax and the fourth annual update published by Mediafax following release by the U.S. Government of Year 2000 Puerto Rico Census data. Mediafax utilized the 2000 Sampling Frame for the 2004 Enumeration Survey (i.e. referred to herein as the “TVQ”) completed during the September-December 2004 time period.
The TVQ Study provides current statistical data for key TV environmental variables not measured by the US Census. TVQ data, collected from an island-wide sample and tabulated by region, estimates the percentage of homes with Television, homes with a Child or Teen and homes with Multiple TV sets.
Mediafax completes annual Universe updates of persons and households with the assistance of an independent demographic consultant, Mr. David Rosario Robles. Mr. Rosario’s updates of the Puerto Rico Population utilize established demographic modeling methods including a United Nations Population Council model for estimating population size by age-sex demographics. For household estimates, a proprietary model is utilized. The model is based upon Census 2000 and includes a correlation test comparing model estimates to current residential customer data from the Puerto Rico electric authority.
Validated with actual Census data, these techniques provide annual updates of Census 2000 populations at the Region level. In addition to their use of US Census 2000 data, these models utilize statistical data on births, deaths, immigration and emigration. The modeled population estimates are developed at the individual municipio level and then aggregated to the Region level where updated statistical data obtained from TVQ Enumeration Surveys are applied to produce 2005 TV Universe Estimates.
