Men get Social too!
August 3, 2010
Females are known for being communicators, and their social media usage is legendary among marketers, many of whom focus on targeting women on social sites. But men also care about staying in touch, and do so in much the same way.
According to a survey conducted by Ipsos OTX for Askmen.com, Facebook was barely edged out by text messaging as the top way for men to stay in touch with their friends.
The youngest respondents chose Facebook above texting or phone calls, suggesting that younger males might be more closely connected with the social scene. They also showed less reliance on email, which, along with the telephone, was one the top communication choice of older men.
Facebook usage was high among respondents, nearly 70% of whom said they logged on to the site regularly.
While The Media Audit found in July that some 55% of the US Facebook audience was female, that still leaves a large share of men to target on the site—and 70% of male internet users is no small audience. And with men more comfortable than women with location-based services, Facebook’s new Places feature may catch on more quickly among males, giving marketers an even greater opportunity in this department.
Twitter was much less popular—as it is in the general population—with just 8.5% of men telling OTX and Askmen.com that they used it regularly. Nearly 60% said they didn’t use it because they considered it useless, while another 12% admitted not understanding what the service was.
