September 21, 2008
On Wednesday, October 22, residents of the United States will be able to watch the 2009 Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant, the biggest, most beloved television event in Puerto Rico, live from San Juan-exclusively on WAPA America.
For the first time in Puerto Rican history, the public was able to choose five of the pageant’s 20 semifinalists through a competition captured on Por La Corona, a 10-week reality series that depicted the drama and intrigue as more than 70 prospective contestants pursued their dream of competing in the Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant. Each week viewers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. were able to vote for their favorite candidates via text message.
On Wednesday, October 22, more than 70 candidates from across the Island will vie for the title of Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2009 and go on to represent Puerto Rico in the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant.
Puerto Rico has produced the second highest number of Miss Universe winners in the world, including Dayanara Torres (1993), Denise Quiñones (2001) and Zuleyka Rivera (2006).
“This is the most-anticipated television event of the year,” said Joe Ramos, president of WAPA Television. “It is an exciting night for both the Puerto Rican and American audiences to watch some of the most beautiful women in the world compete for this prestigious national title.”
The 2009 Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant will feature performances by some of Puerto Rico and Latin America’s favorite pop and reggaeton artists, including RKM & Ken-Y, whose latest CD just went platinum after selling more than 100,000 copies, Angel & Khriz who have the top-selling song, “Na de na,” and Reik, a well-known trio from Mexico that recently released their third album.
The pageant will be hosted by former Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera and Mexican actor Rodolfo Jiménez. Current Miss U.S.A. Crystal Stewart will be present as a special guest.
The pageant will air live on WAPA-TV and simultaneously in the U.S. on WAPA America at 8:00 p.m. EST on October 22, 2008.
