MTV LatAM Unplugged With Diego Torres.

MTV Latin America announced the taping of an MTV Unplugged with Argentine icon Diego Torres. The 18th acoustic concert to be taped on Thursday, March 4th, in Buenos Aires, Argentina marks the first time MTV Latin America produces an Unplugged show in the region. The show will air on MTV Latin America in April and internationally on MTV Español in the United States, MTV Brazil and MTV Spain, and will be available to air on all MTVs around the world as well as on select broadcast networks. The MTV Unplugged show will also be released on CD and DVD, to be distributed in April by BMG throughout Latin America, the United States and Spain.

“The Unplugged franchise is a great way to look back at an artist’s successful career, while taking it beyond geographic and creative boundaries”, said Charlie Singer, Senior Vice President, Programming and Production, MTV Networks Latin America. “We felt that Diego’s talents, success and charisma along with his solid discography are all the right elements needed to create an exciting Unplugged.”

“Diego Torres is a top priority artist for BMG in the next couple of years and the link to a brand as powerful as MTV underlines that status. This exciting project will bring Diego to an even higher level in Argentina and position this truly great artist even better to reach out to millions of music lovers in the Latin region. This is very exciting for all of us,” said Maarten Steinkamp, President, BMG International.

Singer and songwriter Diego Torres is an icon of Latin American music. Throughout ten years of career, his popularity has increased with every production. Torres has five studio albums as a solo artist and a prolific path in film and TV. His recordings reached Gold and Multi-Platinum status in Argentina and markets such as Spain, Colombia, Venezuela and Chile. His songs became hits and lead the radio charts in several countries: Color Esperanza, La última noche, Penélope, Qué sera, and many others, are synonymous of the Latin American pop music culture.

Some of Diego’s recent achievements include being chosen to perform for the Pope and an audience of one million people in Madrid last year. His popularity has reached such heights that he is the first Argentine pop artist to perform a sold-out massive show at Buenos Aires River Plate Stadium. Additionally, he established a historic record in Argentina by performing 14 consecutive sold out concerts at Luna Park stadium. Internationally, Diego’s success keeps growing having sold over 1.5 million albums up to date.

“Diego has had such a prolific musical career, that selecting the right repertoire for this show will be a challenge”, said Charly Vazquez, Senior Director of Music and Artist Relations, MTV Networks Latin America. “The songs will be re-worked with an Unplugged feel. The goal is to re-invent some of the classic hits and introduce some new material and some surprises along the way, thus making the show as musically dynamic and exciting as possible”.

Charlie Singer, Sr. VP of Programming and Production, MTV Networks Latin America will be Executive Producer of the Diego Torres MTV Unplugged; Diego Alvarez, Director of Production, MTV Networks Latin America will produce the show; José Tillán, VP of Music and Artist Relations, will be in charge of the musical supervision and Charly Vazquez, Senior Director of Music and Artist Relations will be music coordinator.

Some of the MTV Unplugged shows produced by MTV Latin America have prompted the recognition of the international music industry to participating artists. The Alejandro Sanz MTV Unplugged won three 2002 Latin Grammys for “Album of the Year”, “Record of the Year”, and “Song of the Year”. The Mexican band Maná received a Latin Grammy in 2000 as “Best Pop Group or Duo” for the song “Se Me Olvidó Otra Vez” from the album Maná MTV Unplugged. Colombian singer Shakira also received a Grammy Award and two Latin Grammys for her MTV Unplugged album.

Diego Torres MTV Unplugged show will join the Unplugged series taped by MTV Latin America with artists such as Café Tacuba, La Ley, Alejandro Sanz, Maná, and Shakira, among others.
