August 21, 2004
mun2 television will celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of five super specials covering the Hispanic presence on both coasts of the nation and paying tribute to high-profile Hispanics in the film industry. Hispanic Heritage Month is observed September 15 through October 15; mun2 specials to celebrate this month will air on Saturdays at 10PM ET/PT, for five consecutive weeks.
“We are very proud to celebrate the Latino presence in the U.S., together with its legacy and accomplishments, as the entire nation observes Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Yolanda Foster, Vice President of Programming & Promotions for mun2. “It’s natural for us to celebrate with special programming that promotes an appreciation for our Hispanic culture.”
Opening this Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will be Miami’s “Calle 8,” the largest street festival in the U.S. Originally aired in March, this special will give viewers a second opportunity to watch a reggaeton extravaganza on Saturday, September 18, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The “Calle Ocho” special, hosted by “The Roof” anchors Melanie Byron, Frankie Needles and Felix Sama, will let viewers see how mun2 took over Telemundo’s stage with its own opening act, featuring performances by top reggeton artists. The star-studded line-up includes Don Omar, an artist that launched his first solo album last year; Habana Squad, a group that portrays the sad reality of the Cuban people with very powerful lyrics; Alberto Stylee, a reggeton pioneer from Puerto Rico; Aldo Ranks, whose album “Diferente” placed him as the first Panamanian artist to be launched by the Universal Music label; and Trivales, a newcomer group to the world of reggeton.
Building up the month-long celebration will be “The Roof on the Road: El Reventon Urbano,” a music program that will air Saturday, September 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT and highlights mun2 primetime music and entertainment show “The Roof” on tour in Los Angeles. Filmed at the Grand Avenue Night Club, the special will feature a wide mix of hot Latin urban music stars, including award-winning bachata duet Monchy & Alexandra; regional Mexican urban groups BandaHood and Kinto Sol; reggeton group Trivales; new Latin hip-hop sensation Chuly; urban-pop and Latin tropical group Fulanito; female Mexican regional urban music artist Flakiss; popular meren-house group Ilegales; Panamenian band La Factoria and urban regional Mexican band Akwid. The special is hosted by Melanie Byron (host of “{The Roof”), J Dubs (“The Roof’s” L.A. correspondent). Alex III, host of “L.A. Streets,” will be a special guest.
Focusing on the Puerto Rican presence in the U.S., “The Roof” will also present another special titled “Celebrating Boricua Pride.” This one-hour show will air Saturday, October 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, and it will include highlights of the popular Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York with interviews of high-profile Puerto Rican artists like Victor Manuelle, Tito Nieves and Ivy Queen, among others.
A special tribute will be paid to successful Hispanics in the U.S. film industry with a one-hour special titled “Latinos on Film,” which will debut on Saturday, October 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. This special will feature high-profile actors and actresses like Andy Garcia, Diego Luna, Roselyn Sanchez, Gael Garcia Bernal, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro, Elena Anaya, Johan Leguizamo and Eva Mendez.
A week after the official end of the Hispanic Heritage Month, on Saturday, October 23, another special titled “Caminos: Café Tacuba” will debut, airing at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. This one-hour documentary will feature Mexico’s top rock en español band, covering its 14-year career, from its beginnings doing club gigs to the year of recess that almost ended the life of the band. This special is the seventh episode of the Emmy Award-winning series titled “Los Especiales de Planeta Rock,” which is produced by Perfect Image Film & Video Production.
