Just recently, Manu Chao received two Billboard Latin Music Awards in the categories of Pop Album of the Year and Latin Rock Album of the Year. His award-winning and most recent release, “Próxima Estación…Esperanza”, has sold over 2 million copies worldwide since its launch in June 2001.
Manu Chao, whose records are widely known in Latin America, was born in Paris on July 21, 1961, to a Galician man living in exile in France to escape Franco’s dictatorship. His beginnings in music were with the bands Hot Pants and Los Carayos. Then, together with his cousin Santiago Casariego, he created the Mano Negra group in 1987, which produced his first hit, “Mala Vida”. Shortly after an extended and exhausting tour throughout Latin America -which included Colombian
villages besieged by guerrillas and drug-traffickers- the group broke up. In 1998 he made a comeback with “Clandestino,” an album inspired by his long stay in Latin America and Africa.
