March 3, 2003
The owners of America’s Hispanic publications, gathered in Las Vegas, NV, for a four-day convention, elected Philadelphia publisher Hernan Guaracao as the new president of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP). Mr. Guaracao is the founder and publisher of Al Día, one of the fastest growing Hispanic owned and operated newspapers in the Northeast, based in Philadelphia, PA.
Also elected during the NAHP’s 18th Annual National Convention, which was held in Las Vegas March 19-22, was the publisher of Washington DC’s newspaper, El Pregonero, Oscar Reyes as new Vice President, a partner at Los Angeles’ newspaper La Opinion Francisco Lozano as new Vice President of Marketing, the publisher of Las Vegas’ newspaper El Mundo Eddie Escobedo Sr. as the new Treasurer, and the publisher of Dallas’ newspaper El Hispano News Lupita Colmenero for her first elected term as Secretary after an interim appointment.
“I will run the NAHP as a business, based on sound corporate principles, to ensure that the association reaches its fullest development as the premier organization representing Hispanic print,” said Mr. Guaracao.
Mr. Guaracao has served on the NAHP board for five years, two of those as vice president of the organization. He is a Fulbright scholar who holds two degrees in the field of journalism, one from his native Colombia and the other a Master’s in Journalism from the University of Iowa. He has also been recognized as Hispanic Professional of the Year in Pennsylvania and Hispanic Businessman of the Year in New Jersey.
“Hernan Guaracao is a seasoned leader and businessman who will lead the organization to a brighter future. I am confident that with Mr. Guaracao’s leadership the NAHP will continue to grow in membership, visibility and influence to further the goals of NAHP’s Hispanic print industry,” said NAHP Chief Executive Officer Ivonne Cunarro.
The NAHP convention, entitled Credibility, Research, and Service, brought together over 400 publishers, advertisers, corporate sponsors, government representatives and print industry insiders to discuss and share best practices in publishing and further the Hispanic print industry.
At the convention, the NAHP also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The agreement creates a partnership between both organizations to work together to advance the interests of Hispanic-owned publications and Hispanic-owned businesses.
