National Symphony Orchestra Of the Dominican Republic @ Alice Tully Hall in NYC.

Banco Popular Dominicano, National Supermarket Association, Verizon and the Dominican American Chamber of Commerce will present a historic concert “A Night of Classical Merengue” with the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. The September 26th concert at Alice Tully Hall will feature the highly regarded musical director and conductor Maestro Carlos Piantini. ?The concert will be the Lincoln Center debut of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. The Symphony was founded in 1941 with the mission to perform classical music concerts, preserve the work of Dominican musicians, and to maintain a solid membership of musicians and directors.

Conductor Carlos Piantini is the most internationally recognized classical performer to come out of his native Dominican Republic. He began his musical career as a violinist and played for 15 years with the New York Philharmonic under musical director Leonard Bernstein. His decision to turn to conducting led him to Vienna, where he studied under Dr. Hans Swarowsky.

Maestro Piantini currently holds the post of Conductor Laureate of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic as well as a faculty position at Florida International University as director of Orchestral Studies. Past positions include artistic director of the National Theater of Santo Domingo, where he staged 29 operas, a five-year stint as principal conductor of the Caracas Philharmonic Orchestra and 10 years as musical director and conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic.

The Maestro has led some of the finest orchestras in the world: Among them are the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington D.C.), San Carlos Symphony (Naples, Italy), Jerusalem Symphony, Ile de France (Paris), Taiwan Symphony, Havana Symphony, and the Orchestra Internationale de Italia. He also became a regular conductor with the Alessandro Scarlatti Orchestra of Radio Televisione Italiania (RAI). In his operatic career, he has also performed with renowned artists: Monserrat Caballe (La Boheme), Alfredo Kraus (Marina), Giorgio Tozzi (Barber of Seville), Louis Quilico (Rigoletto), Christina Dautekom (Norma), and Rita Shane (The Magic Flute).
