NBCUNIVERSAL Telemundo Enterprises celebrates anniversary of TELEMUNDO ACADEMY
April 20, 2023
NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises celebrated five years of growth and expansion of its multimedia career mentorship and student development program, Telemundo Academy. To mark the occasion, the company announced a new partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), an international organization representing more than 500 colleges and universities in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Latin America, and Spain committed to Hispanic higher education success. The new partnership serves to further expand the reach of Telemundo Academy, bringing hands-on experience, access and professional knowledge to even more Latino students pursuing careers across the media industry.
Telemundo Academy began as a one-of a kind program in 2018 with two partner institutions near Telemundo Center, the company’s Miami-based world-class headquarters. The original program served 30 students interested in pursuing media and entertainment careers both in front of and behind the camera over a 16-week program. Since its inception, the program has expanded to serve over 600 students at 18 Institutions in Florida, Nevada, and New York. Through Telemundo Academy, more than 30 Telemundo senior executives and their teams have participated as lecture leaders and judges for student pitches and presentations. The program has also grown to include a scholarship component in partnership with The College Board, awarding over $100,000 in scholarships annually.
Thanks to the new partnership with HACU, Telemundo Academy is positioned to continue growing. Telemundo and HACU announced today plans to collaborate with Hispanic-serving institutions in Chicago, Orlando, Las Vegas, San Antonio, and Denver to provide educational resources, career development opportunities, and mentorship programs to Latino students interested in the television, communications, and media industries.
“Telemundo Academy is more than an academic program – it’s a game changer for how we prepare students for their careers, bridging the gap between the classroom and the real world, equipping students with the tools they need to thrive professionally in a career in media,” said Christina Kolbjornsen, SVP, Corporate & External Affairs, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. “With the support of our partners at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, we are thrilled to expand the program to more students in more cities, and further our commitment to developing and supporting the next generation of Latino leaders.”
“This new partnership with Telemundo Academy will foster an innovative approach for students interested in gaining experience in Spanish broadcasting and will unleash their potential,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “Learning from the real-world experiences of Hispanic media professionals at Telemundo is an invaluable opportunity for the next generation of Hispanic students seeking careers in media. We are thankful this partnership will bring expertise, advice and industry knowledge to students looking to develop skills, perspectives, and professional networks.”
Through the new partnership, Telemundo will connect media executives to Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI’s) each semester, creating a unique opportunity for students to learn from top professionals in the industry. The program seeks to provide valuable industry exposure to young Hispanic talent, including highlighting the breadth of career opportunities within the world of media and entertainment. In doing so, Telemundo Academy seeks to inspire the next generation of media professionals, while also helping to build a more diverse and inclusive media landscape.
Telemundo Academy’s semester long curriculum includes a diverse range of subjects related to media production including Digital and Social Media, Production Elements, Research, and The Power of Storytelling. The educational program offers students a complete curricular hands-on experience detailing the processes and elements of creating an original production, as well as opportunities to experience tapings of original Telemundo productions.
