Debuting on April 26, 2001, Noticias 26, Central Florida’s only live local Spanish television newscast, garnered a 1.0 Nielsen Household Rating 6-6:30PM Monday-Friday in the just completed May Ratings Sweeps, up 400% in the same time period from its performance in the 2000 May Sweeps. Noticias 26 also gained a share point in the market year to year.
WVEN 26 Univision Orlando’s Prime Time schedule 8-11PM M-F also enjoyed strong gains, growing 400% year to year in the May Sweeps. “Despierta America’s” audience 7-10AM M-F grew by 100% as did the station’s overall performance Sign-on to Sign-off 7A-1A M-F during May Sweeps year to year.
Univision’s dramatic gains in Orlando come on the heels of its upgrade from a low power to a full power television station in the market, WVEN-TV 26. Purchased earlier this year, WVEN-TV 26 began operating as a Univision affiliate at the beginning of March, 2001 as part of a strong investment by Entravision Communications in Orlando, the second fastest growing Hispanic market in the country among markets with 75,000 Hispanic Households or larger. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the Hispanic population in the Orlando DMA grew by 154% during the last decade.
Through its full power broadcast facility and full market cable penetration, WVEN-TV 26 Univision is the only Spanish television station providing complete coverage of the 350,000+ Latinos living in the Orlando-Daytona-Melbourne DMA as of 2001, representing 12% of the total population according to the new 2000 U.S. Census figures.
