Noticias Telemundo announces New Leadership Team

Noticias Telemundo announced the appointment of its senior news leadership team under the news division’s new head, Patsy Loris. The announcement comes as the award-winning news organization expands its multiplatform news coverage delivering comprehensive news and information for the Hispanic community.

“This is a critically important time for the Hispanic community with the country still in the grips of a pandemic and heading into what will be closely watched midterm elections,” said Loris. “I’m very excited we have assembled a top-notch team of experienced news leaders who will ensure Noticias Telemundo continues to keep Latinos informed with rigorously reported news and innovative storytelling across all platforms.”

Effective immediately, the appointments include:

  • Gabriela Tristán is named Senior Vice President, News. A seasoned executive with 29 years of experience working in news and more than 15 years leading news teams, Tristán joins Noticias Telemundo and will oversee the editorial and production units of its news programs, including the flagship newscast Noticias Telemundo and the morning news show, hoyDía. She will also be responsible for special news programming including primetime news specials, breaking news coverage and events. An Emmy Award winner, Tristán recently served as vice president and director of news production at Univision, where she oversaw the daily production and broadcast of all the network’s newscasts. Tristán was part of the team that launched Univision’s Al Punto with Jorge Ramos public affairs show and developed the format for Edición Digital, the first national newscast to simultaneously air on broadcast television and stream on Facebook Live. She was also a part of the news team that received an Edward R. Murrow Award for the network’s coverage of the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Park bombings. After starting out as an intern, Tristán built her career from the bottom up, holding successive editorial and producer positions at Univision, including several executive producer roles.
  • Gemma Garcia is promoted to Senior Vice President, Digital News, responsible for leading and growing Noticias Telemundo’s expanding digital news initiatives. Since joining the network in 2016, Garcia has served as the executive producer of “Noticias Telemundo” and the vice president for network and digital news, overseeing the editorial vision, day-to-day operations and production of Telemundo’s Emmy award-winning national weekday evening newscast. Under her direction, the newscast last year won an Emmy for outstanding newscast or news magazine in Spanish. Garcia has also led some of the news network’s most ambitious and innovative digital initiatives, helping to reach new audiences with the launch of Axios Latino, an English-language newsletter covering Latino issues in partnership with Axios, and Radar 2021, a digital English-language news and commentary show. Garcia joined Noticias Telemundo from Spanish television broadcaster TVE, where she held positions as chief correspondent in New York, Italy and the Vatican and Morocco and deputy head of TVE’s news department, among other roles.
  • Vanessa Pombo is promoted to Senior Vice President, Business Operations, News. Pombo will manage the news division’s operations and resource allocation, responsible for finance, human resources, legal and sales. Pombo will also oversee studio and field operations production needs. She previously was vice president of production management and business operations and has helped develop new revenue opportunities across the news division. She has held several production management and business roles. Previously Pombo was the senior director of production management at Telemundo Studios where she worked directly with production and creative executives supporting production projects for launch. Before joining Telemundo, Pombo served as vice president at Univision Studios managing entertainment and reality productions.

Tristán, Garcia and Pombo will report to Loris, executive vice president of news who was named head of Noticias Telemundo in November. She succeeded Luis Fernandez, who retired at the end of 2021, and took over as the top executive on January 1st.

Loris led Noticias Telemundo’s coverage of the historic 2020 presidential election, including the presidential inauguration and the January 6th 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
