NYC Hispanic ‘Wrap Star’ Competes In National Gift-Wrapping Contest.
October 22, 2005
Gift-wrapping for rap star Sean “Diddy” Combs, talk show extraordinaire Oprah and even former President Bill Clinton is no small feat. But for New York City resident Nilda Garcia, it’s just another day on the job. Having wrapped for these and other celebrities, Garcia might just face her toughest wrapping challenge to date— trying to outwrap seven other gifted wrappers in the ninth annual Scotch Brand Most Gifted Wrapper Contest.
A professional gift wrapper for specialty store Kate’s Paperie in New York City, Garcia will go head-to-head with amateur and professional gift wrappers, including a professional wrapper for domestic diva Martha Stewart and a gifted wrapper who dresses up packages for Garcia’s previous employer, Macy’s.
Garcia can no longer count the number of gifts she’s wrapped in her 7-year career as a gift-wrapping professional, though she does recall completing 400 wraps on a particularly busy day. Her gift-wrapping style ranges from classic and elegant to the truly outrageous, having dressed up packages in the shape of a baby carriage, doll house, silk kimono and even a haunted house.
The New York City resident will leave no bow untied as she vies for the coveted title of “America’s Most Gifted Wrapper” and the $10,000 grand prize. In celebration of the 75th “diamond” anniversary of Scotch transparent tape, the winner of the competition will also ride off with a brand new Vespa LX scooter and one-of-a-kind “diamond” encrusted helmet.
An independent judge selected Garcia and the seven other gifted wrappers to participate in the contest, based on a brief essay describing each of their immense talent and experience in the art of gift-wrapping.
