Pele Takes The Field For Sierra Mist.
March 6, 2004
World famous soccer superstar Pele will lace up his boots one more time as he joins 14-year-old soccer sensation Freddy Adu in a new commercial for Sierra Mist. The official soft drink of Major League Soccer is also the title sponsor of the Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game.
Titled “World Cup,” the commercial is set on a soccer field where Pele and Adu compete for the last bottle of Sierra Mist while working up a sweat on an extremely hot day. It turns into the classic battle of youth versus experience, as only one can claim the coveted prize — an ice-cold, “shockingly refreshing” Sierra Mist. The spot will premiere during Adu’s MLS
debut, when he and D.C. United square off against the San Jose Earthquakes in the season’s first game on April 3 at 4 p.m. (EDT) on ABC.
“Pele is a sports icon and to have the opportunity to feature him in our Sierra Mist commercial with Freddy Adu, the top youth star in soccer, is very special,” said Tyler Ricks, director of multicultural marketing, Pepsi-Cola North America. “We originally developed this as a Spanish-language commercial but added an English version because we believe the enormous popularity of both athletes will make this a very popular ad.”
