PR cuatro legend Yomo Toro dead at 78.

Legendary Puerto Rican cuatro player Jomo Toro died late Saturday after a long battle with cancer. He was 78.

Toro died at a hospital in the Bronx, according to Luisito Figueroa, director of the Orchestra Harlow.

The cuatro master was the first to integrate the local instrument into salsa. His musical credits include a legendary turn on “Asalto Navideño,” a beloved Christmas album headed by Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe.

Toro was born Victor Guillermo Toro Vega Ramos Rodriguez Acosta on July 26, 1933 in the Ensenada area of Guanica.

He performed salsa music as well as jibaro (traditional rural Puerto Rican music) on his cuatro, a ten-string guitar from Puerto Rico, derived from the Spanish lute.
