Realities of Latino Representation in TV & Film: New LDC Report Unveiled [REPORT]

The Latino Donor Collaborative (LDC) released the 2022 Full-Year LDC Latinos in Media Report©, an update to LDC’s 2022 Latinos in Media Report in partnership with Nielsen.

  • Calling Out Specific Networks: The report calls attention to specific cable and premium cable networks, such as HGTV, Discovery, TLC, and HBO (all owned by Warner Bros. Discovery), which have zero Latino leads across their 27, 37, 23, and 28 primetime shows, respectively. Netflix has just two Latino leads across all of its 124 shows, while Apple TV+ has one across 44 shows.
  • Hispanic Casting Drives Bingeability: According to Nielsen, 42% of the most binge-able streaming programs of 2021 were directly influenced by Latino talent, with more than half of these shows’ audiences coming from outside the Latino demographic.
  • Negative Latino Stereotyping on TV: So far in 2022, Latinos represented only 3.1% of lead actors in TV shows and 2.1% of co-lead/ensemble actors, and the majority of those roles were stereotypical and negative. Only 1.5% of TV showrunners and 1.3% of directors were Latino.
  • Equally Disappointing Numbers in Cinema: On film, representation is just as dismal, with Latinos representing just 5.2% of lead actors and 5.1% of co-lead/ensemble actors. Only 3.5% of screenwriters and 2.6% of directors were Latino.

“The U.S. Latino representation data for the last quarter of 2022 is truly shocking. The numbers actually went backward from the first three quarters and to 2019 levels,” Valdez explained. “The bottom line is that U.S. Latinos continue to be invisible in the general market of TV and film.”
