SBS Launches ‘Onda 92’ In Chicago.

Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. announced the launch of a new Spanish-language FM radio format serving the Chicago market.

The new Spanish adult contemporary “Onda 92” commenced operations on January 6th, in celebration of the Three Kings Day Holiday which is observed by Latinos the world over.

“Onda 92” is currently being simulcast on WKIE-FM, WDEK-FM and WKIF-FM pursuant to a local marketing agreement entered into between Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. (“SBS”) and Big City Radio.

On December 31, 2002, SBS agreed to acquire the three FM facilities from Big City for $22 million. The closing, which is subject to certain regulatory approvals, is expected to take place during the second quarter of 2003.

“Onda 92” will join the SBS ratings leader WLEY-FM (“La Ley 107.9”) which has held the #1 Spanish ranking in Chicago since 1997.

Raul Alarcon, President and CEO of SBS, commented, “We are very excited about offering this musical alternative to Chicago’s listeners and advertisers. Together with WLEY-FM, the new ‘Onda 92’ will further solidify and consolidate our leadership position in Chicago Spanish Radio.”
