Scholarship Month Kicks Off @ NAHP Foundation.

May is scholarship month! The National Association of Hispanic Publications Foundation continues to offer scholarships and make available a vast array of financial aid at its Web site, http://www.scholarshipforhispanics.org , for Hispanic students who aim to secure a higher education.

In April, the NAHP Foundation awarded another $1,000 scholarship to Jorge Ayala, Jr., who is a young Hispanic student at Dewitt Clinton High School in New York. “It will help me to get the education I want,” said Ayala, a 17-year-old senior student who has already been accepted at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.

The award was announced by NAHP Foundation Chairman Eddie Escobedo, Sr. at the New York City offices of member publication El Diario/La Prensa, one of the oldest Hispanic newspapers in the country.

“The Foundation has been a strong activist for Hispanic education. We want many more students such as Jorge Ayala to reach their college dream,” said Escobedo Sr.

Despite the rapid growth in the Hispanic population, higher education opportunities for Hispanics are still scarce. In the past 10 years, the Hispanic population has grown 134 percent, but still 50 percent of Hispanics have an annual household income of less than $30,000 and only 11 percent of them graduate from college, compared to 29 percent of non-Hispanic whites.

Responding to such alarming numbers, the NAHP Foundation has also launched the 6th edition if its’ Hispanic Scholarship Directory, which offers over 1,000 scholarship listings in book, CD-ROM and online format. In March, at the NAHP, Inc. Annual Convention, the NAHP Foundation awarded three high-school students with a $1,000 to each. It also sponsored two students, with the support of the PepsiCo Foundation, to report daily stories during the convention.

Scholarships are available thanks to a generous grant of $10,000 from PepsiCo Foundation. To apply for this scholarship or others like it, go to http://www.scholarshipsforhispanics.org .
