Sí TV Exceeds Industry Diversity Data.
September 28, 2004
One week after the release of the 2003 SAG Casting Data report, which announced a serious decline in roles on television and film for minorities, Sí TV has released its own casting data in which the network reported an 81.5% diversity rate.
“Despite the release of the 2000 Census numbers, which showed the exponential growth of the multicultural population, it’s disappointing to see how the industry has lagged in promoting more diversity,” says Sí TV Chairman Jeff Valdez. “This isn’t about jumping on the bandwagon; it’s about creating good programming that’s good for our business.”
The recently launched Sí TV produces seven original shows, including “The Rub,” “Urban Jungle,” “Inside Joke,” “Across the Hall,” “The Drop,” “Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner,” and “Latino Laugh Festival: The Show” all of which have multi-ethnic hosts.
Sí TV’s study found that Latinos make up 62.5% of its lead actors compared to 4.9% of the industry as reported in the SAG study. Additionally, Sí TV’s study found that:
– Latinas make up 71.4% of lead female roles compared to 5.7% of the industry as reported in the SAG study.
– Latino males account for 58.8% of supporting actors compared to 5.5% of the industry.
– Latinas comprise 51.4% of its supporting female roles compared to 6.1%.
– Asians and Blacks fill 25.2% of the network’s supporting roles compared to 18.5% of the industry.
– Latinos account for 57% of all roles compared to 5.4% of the industry as reported in the study.
“We are very proud to be able to make a difference in Hollywood,” said Sí TV COO, Leo Perez. “It’s important for us to not only to provide quality programming, but to reflect the true face of America on the small screen.”
