Surge In Latin American Fixed Wireless Broadband Services.
October 21, 2001
While financial markets across the region seem less than stable, The Strategis Group reports a market shift toward increased availability of fixed wireless broadband services and a total overhaul of supporting business models throughout Latin America. As a cheaper alternative to wireline telecommunications services, fixed wireless broadband services are finally poised to capture the market share once envisioned.
The recent Strategis Group study, “Fixed Wireless Markets: Latin America,” reports a significant increase in the region’s demand for high-speed wireless services during the past 18 months. Until recently, higher-frequency solutions seemed ready to dominate, yet many countries have not yet auctioned such spectrum licenses. Now, however, deployment costs for lower-frequency technologies are proving to be significantly more economical, and equipment is available from a larger number of vendors. Additionally, influential pan- regional service providers are offering a more stable infrastructure to meet
demand for fixed wireless broadband networks, which are anticipated to expand rapidly as the region emerges from the current economic recession.
“All around Latin America, telecom incumbents are looking into fixed wireless broadband technologies as a tool to expand their network reach and capacity, to increase their service portfolio and to decrease their infrastructure costs,” says Peter Jarich, director of broadband research with The Strategis Group. “As soon as the current economic slowdown is over, fixed wireless spectrum licensing will again be one of the main priorities across the region, and we’ll see more rapid expansion of these high-speed services.”
